Breast Milk Cheese Angers La Leche Leader
Situations like the following make La Leche League seem stern, humorless and lactationally pedantic. Some members of the breastfeeding support group are scolding New York chef Daniel Angerer for turning his wife’s breast milk into cheese.
No, it’s not because his extreme locavore offerings are gagging those of us too small-minded to crave our own curdled leftovers. Rather, his cheese balls are, they say to DNAInfo.com, taking food from the mouths of babies.
“Breast milk is for babies,” said Lorretta McCallister, a spokesperson for the organization. “We’re all about breast milk but for breast-feeding babies — for the baby’s nourishment, not adults.”

The Growing Menu of Breast Milk Edibles | Strollerderby commented on Apr 22 10 at 5:31 pmAndrea commented on Mar 11 10 at 3:37 pmYou know, I think LLL is a great organization with an important goal, and maybe it’s just my local chapters, but I kind of get the “stern, humorless, and lactationally pedantic” vibe from my local group too. The meetings were always very serious and the leaders and some of the members were very judgmental and condescending. Also, their judgments seem to extend far beyond breastfeeding into a lot of political issues, which made it really uncomfortable for me and a few other people I know to be there in spite of being 100% on board with the breastfeeding message.
Lucky commented on Mar 11 10 at 6:45 pmGah… boob nazis… I really think it’s no one’s business what women chose to do with their own breastmilk. I’m all for encouraging breastfeeding, but going beyond that is outrageous.

Mistress_Scorpio commented on Mar 11 10 at 7:10 pmThis totes make me want to make breast milk cheese and breast milk butter and take breast milk baths once my milk comes in. I love b’feeding but I despise the vibe LLL brings.
Andrea commented on Mar 11 10 at 7:19 pm@mistress_scorpio: glad to know I’m not the only one who’s ooked out a little by them.
Miki Speed commented on Mar 11 10 at 7:58 pmYa know- if I have breast milk- it IS inside of my very own body- and if I want, maybe I will auction it on Craigslist- but it’s really NUNIYA for anyone else.
Mistress_Scorpio commented on Mar 11 10 at 10:23 pm@andrea: I have a neighbor who is a LC and LLL leader and she was absolutely wonderful as a resource and a friend. She was even down with the booby cheese. I don’t know if the organization is suffering from mission creep or bad messaging, but LLL are borderline as annoying and creepy as PETA.
GP commented on Mar 12 10 at 7:23 amhow tiresome…let’s all jump on the anti-LLL bandwagon because, dear god, they generally are strong in their convictions and have, gulp, opinions! yikes! seriously, if y’all think the tone of McCallister’s quotes was harsh or scolding, you are way too sensitive…yep. sure, they can do whatever they want with her milk…who cares? but McCallister is certainly entitled to her (well-informed and educated) opinion and I really don’t think she expressed it in an inappropriate way.
Andrea commented on Mar 12 10 at 9:25 amI don’t know GP, I was just saying that I had bad experiences with our local group because their strong opinions extended WAY beyond breastfeeding, which for me and apparently other people meant that they failed at breastfeeding support (their goal). If you want to start a group that covers a lot of mommy issues that’s fine with me, but if you want your group to do one thing really well (which was what my impression of LLL was initially) then you should just stick to that instead of getting all holy about every other potential mommy-war out there. And like I said before, I don’t think it’s a bad organization that does bad things, I just think that they step on their own feet when individual chapters get heavily into other issues and push otherwise committed and dedicated breastfeeding moms, or moms who need help and support with the one issue they claim to work on, out.
Samsmomma commented on Mar 12 10 at 3:30 pmWait a minute, if using human breastmilk to feed people who aren’t babies is wrong, then why is it okay for people to drink cows’ milk? Doesn’t that mean we are taking food from the mouths of calves?
joanie commented on Mar 18 10 at 12:00 pmYeah, I find LLL out of line. If you’re gonna talk about breastmilk like it’s liquid gold, you gotta imagine some people will try it themselves. Is Lorretta McCallister intimating that this chef’s wife is NOT feeding her child, because she’s making cheese instead? Should I be scolded for throwing away my “leftovers” in the freezer when my baby weaned? Bah. Get off my boobies, already, they’re not yours!
Genuine commented on Mar 18 10 at 8:18 pmI just don’t understand why everyone seems to be disgusted and cringe at any thought of breastmilk in itself. I definitely agree with Samsmomma 100%. However, there are many babies and adults who benefit from breastmilk. If you do the proper research and look at the breastmilk banks they tell you about all the wonderful things breastmilk can do for people in general with severe allergies and digestive problems. What makes cheese made from a cow better than the milk that was actually intended for us? Actually, I am lactose intolerant and have major issues consuming dairy from the cow. Anyway, I applaud this chef for his creativity and his passion for natural foods. LOL!!

Whatever happened to “my body, my choice?” Or does that not apply to one’s own breast milk, only determining the future of an unbord child…..
Alison commented on Aug 24 11 at 3:12 pmI love my LLL leaders! They laughed about the human cheese. I think this is one leader’s opinion and isn’t meant to represent the whole organization. These are volunteers who lead this . . I’m sure there is a huge range of personalities who sign up.
