When Trashy Books are Good For Kids

the smash smash truck When Trashy Books are Good For KidsMy child is fascinated by the garbage truck. Perhaps because she’s nosy or maybe it’s the mysterious trip the items that couldn’t be weeded out for our recycling bins will take.

Either way, the lure of the trash truck for tots is apparently not limited to my neck of the woods. And Babble found two new kids books that are taking the love to the next level:

The Smash! Smash! Truck by Aidan Potts is more about recycling than true trash, but the delightful noises hidden inside the pages (it’s just fun saying “smash” isn’t it?) are the sorts of things kids love about the garbage truck. And the details of the recycling process are related in a whimsical way that demystifies the process without bogging kids down in boredom.

here comes the garbage barge When Trashy Books are Good For KidsHere Comes the Garbage Barge by Jonah Winter relates a true story from the eighties of a New York town mired down in trash and the garbage barge that took it all away (and encountered an adventure out on the open seas). But it’s the quirky almost claymation-like illustrations by Red Nose Studio that elevate the story of why recycling is so necessary to one that’s sure to please.

My son learned his colors because of the trash cans – blue, green, and brown. For almost a year, we folloed the trash man on his route, all around the neighborhood. I was the first to know when he changed his route. His name is David. :0)

Robyn – glad my kid isn’t the only one! My daughter is likewise obsessed with the UPS man. And she’s disappointed when a different guy shows up.
