The Cat and the Hat Comes to iPhone
The Cat and the Hat has just been put out as an iPhone app by Oceanhouse Media, the nice people who brought us the Grinch game last Christmas. They’ve also released Dr. Suess’ ABCs. Not a moment too soon. My kids got to playtest these on a harrowing cross-country flight. I love you for that, Oceanhouse.
At $3.99, these apps are a little pricey for an iPhone game, but cheaper than a print edition of the book.
As e-books go, these are pretty standard. A simple fingerswipe turns the pages, so even the toddler can read herself a story. The narrator’s voice is pleasant. The illustrations are Dr. Suess’ classics. Can’t go wrong with those. The stories also feature some cool sound effects that go with the illustrations, and small touches of animation as the pages turn.
In other iPhone app news, my daughter just pointed out to me an awesome Easter Egg in the Elmo iPhone app. The game lets you dress up monsters and then play a few silly games with them. It was already awesome, but the feature my kid just discovered brings these little surprise video skits into the dress up part of the app.
For example, if you put a rain hat on your monster and leave it for a few seconds, the background will turn into a rainstorm and the monster will talk about getting wet. Good times.

Your daughter might also like Tales2Go which has over 1,000 kids audio books and stories from publishers like Scholastic and Recorded Books, and great storytellers like Bill Harley, Jim Weiss, Willy Claflin and Diane Ferlatte.
