High School Teacher’s Web Project Shows Teachers are People Too

dan meyer annual report 300x167 High School Teachers Web Project Shows Teachers are People TooA high school teacher who created an online “annual report” in video form, tracking his activities in 2009 by the numbers, did a little more than show us yet another way to make a video go viral.

He reminded us teachers are people too.

Before you say “uh, duh,” let’s look at the stories that get people outraged. Remember the teacher fired for simply raising a glass of wine and using the word b–ch on her Facebook page? The teacher fired for having a second job as a bikini girl on a fishing boat?

The take away message, of course, is that teachers aren’t supposed to have outside lives. But Dan Meyer begs to disagree (hat tip to the Quantified Self). Take a look:

Dan Meyer’s 2009 Annual Report from Dan Meyer on Vimeo.

Yes, Dan Meyer drinks beer. He is partial to Stella Artois it seems. He also listens to, wait for it, rap music on occasion. And he only read twelve books all year.

Wow – a teacher who, well, does the same stuff we do every day? Inconceivable!

Setting all that aside – because, really, who cares? – he’s got a break down of how to do it on his blog, where he’s also got enough math info to make my head spin (sorry kids, you couldn’t pay me to repeat math class). A high school math teacher, he maintains his blog is more for teachers than students, aimed at helping other teachers make their jobs easier.

And if a student happens to find it, they might find out their high school math teacher is a human being who just so happens to have a bit of extra time on his hands to make cool videos.
