henry aarons dream Kids Book of the Week: Henry Aarons DreamBaseball fans can celebrate black history and their favorite sport in one fell swoop this month. A new book out from award-winning author/illustrator Matt Tavares takes your kids back to the days before Hank Aaron had a hammer in his hands.

Henry Aaron’s Dream follow the path of Aaron from playing stickball in Mobile, Ala. before blacks had a diamond to play on, through the Negro Leagues and all the way up to the minors.

Coupled with Tavares’ rich illustrations, it’s as much a depiction of the civil rights struggle as it is of one of baseball’s greatest, and the author is smart to end it in the 50s – pre Martin Luther King and pre Aaron’s major successes on the ball field. In doing so he highlights the major progress that two men (Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron) made on the world simply by pursuing their dreams.

Tavares doesn’t hold back in his story, and you’ll have a lot to talk about with your kids, so make this one a read-together book. Get it from Amazon.
