Elmo Rocks the iPhone

img 0501 300x200 Elmo Rocks the iPhoneSesame Street has done it again. Created an awesome iPhone app, that is. Elmo’s Monster Maker is even more awesome than the first app Sesame Street put out, Grover’s Number Special.

The key difference is that while my kids are fascinated by Grover’s restaurant antics, the adults in the house could not imagine anything less interesting. I’m a little tempted to play the Elmo game even when my kids are not around. It’s just that cool.

The game gives you an array of Muppet monsters to choose from. Once you’ve picked a monster, you get to give it a face and some accessories by tapping the screen to see different options. There are a lot of choices. Some of them are extremely silly, like fried eggs for eyes!

Once you’ve settled on your monster’s features, you can play with your creature. Three different buttons play music that the monster dances to, have Elmo pop out to take a snapshot of your monster, or bring Elmo on screen to play with the monster. Sometimes they have a tickle fight, sometimes they dance, sometimes they play a quick game. Again, there are many options, which makes for a lot of fun playtime.

Downsides: Elmo’s Monster Maker is a monster app. All that cool video takes up a lot of space, over 100 MB of it. This is, for reference, almost as much as every other app on my phone put together.

The game is also pricier than most kids’ apps, at $3.99.
