paris and prince 206x300 Prince and Paris Accept MJs Lifetime Achievement AwardIt’s hard to imagine a more surreal experience for a kid than accepting an award on behalf of his recently deceased father in front of, well, the entire world.

That’s what Paris and Prince did at the Grammys last night, after the likes of Usher, Celine Dion, and Carrie Underwood sang along to Michael Jackson’s 3D “Earth Song” video. I was a bit relieved to see that the surreality of the moment didn’t seem lost on the preteens, despite the infinity of surreal moments they’ve both experienced in their first decade of life.

Both Paris and Prince endearingly stumbled over their words a bit, but seemed genuinely proud to be up there. Prince spoke first, saying, “Through all his songs, his message was simple: love. We will continue to spread his songs and help the world.” Paris added, “Daddy was supposed to be here.”

For the record, this wasn’t just a feel-good moment in any otherwise decadent evening, since a portion of the proceeds from downloads of songs played during the Grammys went to the Red Cross for Haiti hurricane relief.
