bill gates1 300x187 Bill Gates Pledges $10 Billion for VaccinesIn one of the single largest charitable donations ever to be made, Bill Gates committed $10 billion to vaccine research and dissemination for the world’s poorest children.

He hopes the money will be used to immunize 90 percent of children from impoverished areas over the next decade, saving them from potentially deadly illnesses like pneumonia and diarrhea.

During his announcement of the unprecedented donation a the World Economics Forum, Gates did not unleash a swarm of mosquitoes (as he did at the 2009 TED Conference, to drive home the point that more money is being invested in baldness prevention than malaria prevention). But he didn’t have to. $10 billion packs enough of a punch on its own.

“We must make this the decade of vaccines,” he said. “Vaccines already save and improve millions of lives in developing countries. Innovation will make it possible to save more children than ever before.”

Specifically, Gates hopes that his donation will save the lives of 7.6 million children under the age of five by 2019, and emphasized that finding vaccines for malaria and tuberculosis would save millions more lives.
