Children of Same-Sex Couples Stand Up for Their Families
One thing that opponents of same-sex marriage overlook is the fact that many, many gay couples are already raising families. And the children of those families are increasingly speaking up for their parents — and themselves.
One is Kasey Nicholson-McFadden, a blond-haired 10-year-old boy who looks like he just stepped out of a Ralph Lauren ad. When advocates for and opponents of gay marriage converged upon the New Jersey statehouse last month, Kasey gave testimony. According to this New York Times article, he said: “It doesn’t bother me to tell kids that my parents are gay. It does bother me to tell them they are not married. It makes me feel like my family is less than their family.”
He was devasted when the state senate voted against same-sex marriage earlier this month, one of his mothers told the paper. They have been petitioning the state for the right to marry almost as long as Kasey has been alive.
Kids of same sex parents have been appearing in ads, testifying before state legislatures and forming groups like Colage (formerly known as Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) and Glad (Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders). Their perspective ads an interesting twist to the debate: what does telling these kids their families are not legitimate do to them?
I must say, the bravery and strength these kids show in standing up for their families is incredibly impressive. Their moms, or dads, ought to be very proud of their kids.
