Kids in Distressed Situations – a Way to Help Haiti’s Kids
The children of Haiti have been tugging at the heartstrings of the world in the past few weeks, and here on Strollerderby we’re not immune. While the tragedy of what’s happened to the adults is one we wouldn’t ignore, as parents it’s the children who have gone straight to the top of our lists.
We don’t begrudge the adults, but when you read stories of newborns rescued after living with no food or water for an entire week, we simply go weak at the knees.
So we’ve been looking for ways to help the kids themselves, and what could be better than one with KIDS in their name?
Kids clothing company Appaman (a favorite on our own Droolicious) alerted us to K.I.D.S., short for Kids in Distressed Situations. The non-profit got a hefty clothing donation of infant and toddler clothing from Appaman this week, part of a collection from American companies that’s totaled $2 million in new products for the relief efforts. They’ve managed to send twenty containers of supplies already, with clearance to get two containers per day through the airport in Port Au Prince.
K.I.D.S. is looking for more of the same from every day people. In other words, they only want new clothing (and really, if you’re donating to a disaster zone, you shouldn’t be sending your junk anyway – these are people, not a landfill) – including the shirts and pants but also socks and underwear. Blankets also tops their list for the kids.
Well ranked by Charity Navigator (they give them a 99.2 percent efficiency rating), the non-profit has been aiding kids in disaster zones both in the U.S. and abroad for twenty five years. They know what they’re doing, and reviews of the group point to them actually getting the job done.
Want to help? They’ll accept monetary donations online that will go directly toward helping the kids. For every $10 in donations, they can spin out $100 in actual relief, so check out the Kids in Distressed Situations Haitian Relief site now.
