Research Backs Up Money Changes Everything Article
Last week, Babble ran an intriguing story by Nell Casey called Money Changes Everything detailing the shift in parent and gender roles when Mom earns more money than Dad. And now it seems that there are more of those women than ever before. According to a study released on January 19 by the Pew Research Center, 22% of women polled brought home a higher salary than their husbands in 2007, up from only 4% in 1970. Perhaps accordingly, the study also found that, in 28% of couples, the woman had received a higher degree of education than her partner. The opposite was true only 19% of the time. The majority of U.S. college graduates — 53.5% — are now women. All in all, not a bad time to be a girl.

GP commented on Jan 21 10 at 6:17 pmIt’s great that we’ve “come a long way, baby” sure. It’s nice to have choices. What’s not so nice is that most people feel like (whether true or not) two adults have to work to maintain a household. Who loses? The young kids that get shunted off to childcare. Who wins, business, industry, who get to still pay women less for positions, however high-ranking they may be, than men would get in those same positions, typically. Coincidentally, women are feeling more stretched than ever…did you see the WaPo magazine this week?
