Scott Brown – Most Embarassing Dad Ever (VIDEO)

untitled5 Scott Brown Most Embarassing Dad Ever (VIDEO)Everyone is talking about Scott Brown today, the man who stole Ted Kennedy’s seat to make himself the first Republican Senator in Massachusetts since 1972.

You want to talk about how he did it and what it might mean for Massachusetts, the nation, and health care reform?  Go check out Brett’s Morning News.

What I’m here to talk about are his daughters.  Because in his acceptance speech last night, Scott Brown proved himself to be the most embarrassing dad ever:

At my seven-year-old’s birthday party last weekend, a classmate’s dad mentioned to me that his son thought my daughter was “pretty special.”  His son turn 20 shades of red and punched his dad in the leg.

Scott Brown announced to the nation, “anybody who’s watching” that his daughters were “available.”  Ayla seemed to take it pretty well, but Arianna  was clearly mortified.  Scott Brown’s awkward handling of that moment and complete disregard for his daughters’ dignity could be titled, “How Not to Thank Your Daughters for Their Undying Support During Your Campaign.”  He redeems himself, a little, moments later when he actually starts talking about their accomplishments rather than their private love lives.

What do you think?  Cute and classic “dad” move, or just creepy?

I would venture to say that this poor guy hasn’t had a good night’s sleep in about a month. So I would cut him a bit of slack.

I think he tried for a sweet dad move and it came out all wrong. Funny though.

Ugh. Mortifying for the daughters. And why would he say that? What would possess someone speaking to millions of people, to announce that they’re “available”? Gross and inappropriate.

“Stole Ted Kennedy’s seat”? Oh, please.

You only respect Democracy when a democrat wins?

Brown was right… it is the people’s seat, not Kennedy’s.

Lisa commented on Jan 20 10 at 5:28 pm

That’s just not true, Lisa. I respect that he won it fair and square, and I think the Dems really mucked this one up. But this was not meant to be a political post. It was about an awkward family moment that played out before an entire nation.

it’s hard to claim a statement like “stole Ted Kenndedy’s seat” is not meant to be political

I’m a Democrat, and even I bristle at the “stole Ted Kennedy’s seat” comment. (Which of course was political.) I’d be more inclined to say that Martha Coakley gave the seat away.

Laure, that’s about the best description of what happened. About the creepy comment, though, I thought at first he was making a joke about them being available to campaign or Ayla being available to perform as a singer, the sort of cheesy “I also do bar mitzvahs” jokes that people make about someone who is multi-talented. But yeah, even thinking that, I cringed. That is a day that will live in infamy in the Brown household, I think…

Your words, “stole Ted Kennedy’s seat”

How was that respecting that he won it fair and square?

Lisa commented on Jan 20 10 at 6:42 pm

You know, as far as the “available” comment, my family is Middle Eastern, and when I was young and single they were always advertising that I was available. (Although my mom was much more aggressive than my dad.) So the comment doesn’t shock me so much, but it does sound odd from an Anglo.

The “stole Kennedy’s seat” comment? Definitely political. But Lisa is not a new visitor to the site and knows the leanings of most of the writers and the readership.

It restored my faith in humanity that he won – but not because i think he’s so great – i have no idea how he will do as a politician. But Coakley was a monster. In the sense that she is not human. Anyone who would refuse to prosecute the criminal who happened to be a policeman for doing the heinous thing he did to his neice, should have their “humanity card” shredded and be left on a desert island. He didn’t win, she lost.
