Recall Alert: Graco Strollers Amputating Fingertips
Another stroller company is being forced to face up to the danger of folding mechanisms to little fingers. Major stroller maker Graco is recalling 1.5 million of its baby movers.
The recall comes just a few months after the major Maclaren recall made parents fear for those little mitts, and it puts out a fair question:
We love our strollers because they fold up and stow away. But how much of that convenience ends up being bad for baby? Sure, these companies can (and should) make better products, but the folding up process around a kid who doesn’t pay attention (or doesn’t know to) can always be hairy.
In the case of the Graco strollers, it’s the folding and unfolding of the canopy that has resulted in five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations.
With this particular mechanism appearing on both travel systems and the stand alone strollers, all sold over a five year span (up through December last year), there are a lot of these out there. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, this recall involves Graco PassageTM, AlanoTM and SpreeTM Strollers and Travel Systems with the following model numbers and specific hinge mechanisms:
