Recall Alert: Child’s Death Prompts Major Crib Callback

dorel crib 300x206 Recall Alert: Childs Death Prompts Major Crib CallbackThe death of a baby in Iowa has prompted the recall of more than half a million Dorel cribs this week.

The six-month-old child from Cedar Rapids was sleeping in a crib that the parents had tried to repair themselves after the drop-side hardware broke.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is facilitating the recall, there have been thirty-one reported drop side incidents, six of which entrapped children. Most children only suffered bruising, but the baby who died was actually strangled in the crib. The cribs are also subject to slat breakage – with thirty-six incidents reported in recent months.

This isn’t Dorel’s first recall. Late last month a quarter of a million play yards with bassinets made by the Barbados company were called back due to a suffocation risk.

Cribs are becoming a major recall item – one million play cribs from Kolcraft were recalled last summer, followed by two million StorkCraft cribs in November, then a reissued Simplicity crib recall last month. At this rate, where will babies sleep?

If you have a Dorel Crib, here are the numbers to look for:

Call Dorel Asia toll-free at (866) 762-2304 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to get your repair kit, or visit Dorel’s site to order.

Drop-side Cribs Recalled, Called “Deadly Hazards” | Strollerderby commented on May 08 10 at 12:15 pm

Don’t forget the Amby recall. I love the advice these recalls give: Find an alternative place for your baby to sleep. As if it’s easy for most parents to drop what seems like a minimum of $100 on a crib (if you’re lucky and can find one that cheap) on any given day.

No kidding, Andrea. I’m pretty much of the opinion that if they can’t provide recourse (a fix kit, whatever) then they should provide money back. Screw filing bankruptcy and shutting their doors like Simplicity appears to have done; they have our money for an unsafe product, which in my mind, is theft. They did not deliver that for which we paid.

That’s why we co-sleep!
