Newbury and Caldecott Medals Announced
Forget the Golden Globes. The Newbury and Caldecott Awards for children’s literature were announced Monday.
Rebecca Stead won the Newbury Medal for her book, “When You Reach Me,” a mystery novel that was favored by librarians and book bloggers. The Caldecott Medal went to Jerry Pinkney for “The Lion and The Mouse“.
The Newbury Medal is given each year for the “greatest contribution to children’s literature.” Stead’s novel is set in a small, close-knit New York neighborhood in 1979. A young girl, Miranda, has to solve a very important mystery: why did her best friend stop talking to her? The book has spent 8 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list for children’s chapter books.
While the Newbury honors good prose, the Caldecott medal aims to recognize the best in illustrations for children’s books. This years’ winner is an adaptation of the classic Aesop fables about a mouse who helps a lion with an injured paw. With few words and rich illustrations, this book can capture the imagination of children regardless of age.
The awards are given by the Association for Library Service to Children, which is part of the American Library Association. They’re the top awards for children’s literature. The Association also recently named a new childrens’ literature ambassador.
