RECALL ALERT: Tylenol Dramatically Expands Recall, More Children’s Meds on the List
After voluntarily recalling a litany of children’s and adult mediation at the end of December, Tylenol manufacturer McNeil announced an expanded recall today that includes more children’s medications.
In a media briefing today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hammered McNeil for not responding faster to problems in a McNeil manufacturing plant in Puerto Rico.
The expanded recall dwarfs the initial recall. This new recall adds 54 million bottles of product to the recall, bringing the grand total to 60 million. The new list includes Children’s Motrin caplets and chewables, Children’s Tylenol meltaways, Extra-Strength Tylenol caplets and EZ tabs, Rolaids chewables, Benadryl tablets, and St. Joseph’s aspirin chewables and tablets.
The recall revolves around a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA), which results from the breakdown of a chemical in wood pallets used to transport and store packaging materials for the drugs. Products with the chemical tend to have a musty odor and have been linked to sickness and vomiting, though no fatalities have been reported at this time.
Ironically, in the original recall story we featured a picture of Jr. Tylenol Metaways with the disclosure that the product was not on the recall list and now it is.

MAMA commented on Jan 19 10 at 11:18 amI usually buy the generic version, like CVS or Tylenol. Are these included as well?
MAMA commented on Jan 19 10 at 11:18 amI mean Target, not Tylenol. OK, more coffee.
Cole commented on Jan 19 10 at 12:07 pmGeneric brands are NOT included. This recall deals exclusively with products made by the manufacturer McNeil, producers of Tylenol among others.
LolaLane commented on Jan 20 10 at 4:49 pmI knew being cheap and buying the store brand would save me more than just money some day

tots commented on May 07 10 at 11:59 pmHow do we go about getting reimbursed for these recalled items? please give website.
Donna commented on Jun 04 10 at 3:06 pmThe website to request a refund is: https://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/page.jhtml?id=/include/replacement_coupon.inc. You have the choice of a refund or coupon.
The refund request can be done online so there’s no need to do it by mail.
Very glad they’re doing this as we have several products on their recall list. I’m sure we’ll go back to using them again once things get straightened out though.
