Kids’ Vaccines – New Schedule Announced

Posted by bethanysanders on January 5th, 2010 at 9:00 am

818438 41920454 Kids Vaccines New Schedule AnnouncedThe American Academy of Pediatrics, along with the CDC and the AAFP, recently announced changes to the childhood vaccine schedule.

For parents who follow their pediatrician’s vaccination guidelines, not much will change.  New recommendations include:

  • an H1N1 vaccine for all children over the age of six months.
  • HPV2 — a new cervical cancer vaccine for girls — or the older HPV4 should be given to girls at age 11 or 12.
  • HPV4 can also be given to boys 9-18 for the prevention of genital warts.
  • Meningitis booster shots for high-risk kids, which mainly includes those with low immunity.  College age kids who have already been immunized may not need a booster, if they’ve already had the vaccine.

The groups also recommend newer combination vaccinations whenever possible to reduce both needle pokes and trips to the doctor, something that’s sure to go over well with kids and their parents.

So basically, if you vaccinate, keep doing what you’re doing, with a few small tweaks.  If you don’t vaccinate, these three groups are asking you to reconsider.

They Say: Most Parents Skipping Second Swine Flu Shot | Strollerderby commented on Jan 21 10 at 9:25 am

This article is ridiculous. Clearly the pharmaceutical industry’s marketing efforts are working out splendidly, to convince everyone that our children need these additional drugs. How long does this ever-growing list of jabs have to grow before parents wake up and wonder if our children’s little bodies can or should really handle it all? And to suggest we lump them all into more massive, combined doses of questionable cocktails? Parents – do your own research before jabbing your kids. Seriously – spend one single hour looking into what this ever-growing list of recommended vaccines contains – and how much they (have never) been tested in concert with one another. Pharmaceutical companies exist to make money, not save lives. Do the research and then decide what vaccines actually are worth the risk – because don’t kid yourself – there is a risk.
