First Baby of 2010 Was Born at Home
Here’s a Baby New Year story with a twist — in Port Angeles, Washington, the first baby of the year was born at home.
I’ve done my share of “first baby of the year” stories, and this is the first one I have ever seen where the baby came at home (on purpose, anyway). Raechel Allen gave birth to her second daughter, Miya Isabella, in a birthing tub in what was described as a wonderful home water birth. Her husband Ben, daughter Aiya and the grandparents were in attendance at the birth, along with midwife Karla Morgan.
It was Morgan who contacted the newspaper about the baby’s birth. Interestingly, no babies were born New Year’s Day at three area hospitals, so it appears Miya was first at 8:32 am. Raechel’s labor was fairly quick, too, only four and a half hours.
It seems like homebirth is becoming more common, so I suppose one of these stories was bound to surface eventually. As someone who would never in a million years consider a homebirth but thinks it sounds lovely for people a lot more chill about birthing a baby than I am, I liked seeing the straightforward manner in which this story was treated. It was addressed as just another way to give birth, one that clearly suited this couple and their lives, instead of an out-of-the-mainstream practice.
Raechel was due Christmas Eve, but the baby stuck around. In a sweet little detail, her parent’s second wedding anniversary was New Year’s Eve, so she came just after that milestone had passed. Awww. And congratulations to the lovely little family.

Home birth: would you, could you, have you? | Parenting Without a Manual | Work It, Mom! commented on Jan 06 10 at 8:48 amT commented on Jan 04 10 at 7:00 pmIf this were facebook, I’d click “like” but it isn’t facebook. I like this story. I like that we homebirthers aren’t portrayed as weird hippies. lol. I have 5 children. 1st 2 were in the hospital. #3 was a homebirth with midwife. #4 was home waterbirth unassisted and #5 was home waterbirth with midwife.
Yay for homebirth! commented on Jan 25 10 at 7:04 amYay for this beautiful homebirth story! Home birth is a completely safe option for low risk women! Avoid all those hospital interventions, and birth peacefully without being hooked up to all sorts of monitors and IV’s.
I am currently pregnant with my second child, and am planning a home water birth. I birthed my son this way, and it was the best experience of my life. I loved labor and delivery, and i cant wait to do it again! How many women say that after a hospital birth?
