Thomas Train Lead Scandal Settled for $1 Million
Remember rooting through your toy box for those Thomas the Train engines laced with lead back in 2007? Fast forward two years, and the government has finally settled on a $1.25 million fine for toy importer RC2 Corporation.
RC2 and subsidiary Learning Curve are getting off with saying they didn’t break the law knowingly as part of the agreement, but they’ll have to pay the mega fine.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, RC2 “failed to take adequate action to ensure that the toys would comply with the lead paint ban. This failure created a risk of lead poisoning and adverse health effects to children.”
Imported from China, a total of 1.7 million Thomas and Friends Railway toys had to be recalled between summer and fall of 2007. The massive recall prompted the federal government to up the ante on its lead regulations in children’s products.
