hey kids comics 150x150 crop Supergirl and Mini Marvels in Kids Comics This WeekA few notable paperback collections — aka Trade Paperbacks, aka TP, aka ImaBigNerd — are on the list this week along with the usual offerings. Let’s get to it.

Kid Stuff

Billy Batson And The Magic Of SHAZAM #11

Supergirl Cosmic Adventures In The Eighth Grade TP: This series ended too soon in my opinion. It was well-written and drawn, and boys liked it as much as girls. Well, my son liked it. It was a female superhero but it wasn’t a “girly” comic book. Here are links to some more info if you’re curious: ComicsWorthReading.com, ComicBookResources.com.

Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #58

Mini Marvels Ultimate Collection TP: Sometimes of these silly versions of Marvel characters appear to be targeted at adults, or at least not at little kids, which is strange since we’re talking about pint-size depictions of Wolverine and Spider-Man. Most of the humor is perfect for an 8-year-old boy, or his somewhat immature father.

Bart Simpson Comics #51

Disney Pixars Monsters Inc Laugh Factory #4: This series from Boom! Studios is selling like hotcakes, or more accurately, like most Disney/Pixar movies. It’s not great but it’s not awful. Doesn’t rise above the kiddie-comic level, but that’s not always a bad thing.

Disney Pixars Wall-E #1: I have a theory that for their last couple of films, Pixar decided they weren’t going to give Disney any characters they could make any money with. A rat that cooks French food? A robot walking around a post-whatever Earth? The comic is a bit inscrutable, and of all of the Boom! adaptations of the Pixar films so far, seems the most like an attempt to quickly cash in on the Pixar name. It could just be that I don’t get what else there is to talk about when it comes to Wall-E.

Archie #604: They’re still doing the whole “Archie marries Veronica” thing. I may need to borrow my son’s comics and read the whole thing.

Betty & Veronica Digest #200

Sonic Universe #11

Uncle Scrooge #384 2nd Ptg: I find it interesting that my son likes these comics but has never shown any interest in the cartoons.

Grown-up stuff

More Than Complete Action Philosophers TP: This was a great series, although I have to admit that I didn’t understand some of it because I know very little about philosophy. Like the even better Evil Twin Comics series Comic Book Comics, which is about the history of comic books, this one is actually about philosophy. Like, Descartes and stuff. It’s funny and intelligent.

KISS Kompendium HC: A collection (kollection?) of Kiss comic books (komic books?) that have appeared over the years.

Amusing Titles Of The Week

As far as I know, none of these are for kids, and none are on my list of stuff to buy. I just found the titles amusing.

Dead At 17 Afterbirth TP: Ew.

Sherlock Ninja Curious Case Of The Iron Monkey #1: Sherlock Ninja! Couldn’t be any dopier than the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie.

Remember, comic books make great stocking stuffers. Happy Holidays!
