Lesbian Teens Named School’s Best Couple
Votes cast in the senior superlative contest at a South Bronx high school were cast in favor of acceptance this month. The title for best couple at the Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School has gone to a set of lesbian teen.
Victoria Cruz and Deoine Scott have been together for two and a half years and both graduated from high school on Friday.
Members of their school’s aspiring journalists program, they were convinced by a friend in the group to run for best couple, and they told The Advocate a screw up in the ballot printing that asked for “boy” and “girl” almost screwed up their chances. But when someone told the other students they could scratch out boy, they did it with no problem, putting Vikky and Deoine’s names on the sheet before handing it in.
Their victory, they say, is one for gay kids who will come after them because they’ve opened a door.
“I think now, for other gay people who might go to my school, they will have a chance at getting in the yearbook, since we were the first,” Deoine told The Advocate.
It’s still big (and good) news in America, even bigger for two girls in an American high school, one who still has to hide their relationship from certain members of her own family.
So what’s next? College for both of them. . . and an engagement. But first the New York Senate has to take a mind opening page out of one of the state’s high schools.
