Stressed Mothers Spontaneously Abort Male Fetuses

Lose your job and you can lose your male baby. That’s one way of looking at the conclusions of this study.
Okay, I’m not gonna lie, I’m not sure I get all the implications behind this, but here’s what I understand from the results of this study from the University of California, Berkeley:
Evolution created a preservation trigger in females for times of great duress by encouraging the bodies of stressed women to void themselves of male fetuses. And all this has to do with famines. Oh and now losing your job can cause your body to miscarry a boy.
Huh?
Okay, let’s keep going. In times of harsh conditions, namely the aforementioned famines, the continuation of humanity relies more on females being born than males because one male can produce many children while one female is somewhat more limited. Thus, with more females out there, the better the chances of more births and the human race continuing on in the face of, you know, lots of dying people.
Now in the first world we don’t have as much of a famine problem, but the pregnant female body still has the wiring to react to stress hormones by rejecting male fetuses. The study found massive layoffs result in less boys being born. End point: when the chips are down, girl babies win out.

Nicole commented on Dec 19 09 at 3:50 amI just question the wording of the title. Is one a “mother” when simply pregnant? (Anti-choice people would surely love for us to feel this way, but it doesn’t seem like appropriate word choice to me.) Perhaps “women”, or “pregnant women”?
Comstock commented on Dec 19 09 at 6:50 amI question the group selection implied by this statement: “the better the chances of more births and the human race continuing on in the face of, you know, lots of dying people.” Evolution tends not to care much about races or species continuing. Evolution is all about you and yours (your offspring, that is). The evolutionary reasoning in this case is not that the human race continues, but that girls would be more likely to mate and produce offspring when things are tough. So, if your genes want to continue their existence, they’d have more luck if they found themselves in a girl rather than a boy when times are tough. Evolution seems to favor this me-me-me approach, even when it is bad for a species.
Bluster commented on Dec 19 09 at 10:02 amDuring the good times, the 1990′s, I lived in a new housing addition with homes occupied by sucessful and ‘prosperous’ families. As a curiosity project, I counted the boys and girls living within a city block of my home. There were sixteen girls versus three boys.
Maybe this study forgot to compare its results to the birth percentage when times are good?? Could that be??

Males would be more likely to pass on their genes more prolifically as they can sucessfully mate 24/7/365 where females mate sucessfully about 60 days out of the year. Plus, a sucessful pregnancy puts a female out of the mating pool for 9 months whereas a male could impregnate tons more females in that time. Just thinking here.
The real reason commented on Dec 20 09 at 9:08 amWe discussed this in several classes I’ve taken. It is a well known fact in evolution. The reason that this happens in many animals, as well as humans, is that a starving mom can’t usually produce a big, strong, and healthy male that will be a good hunter and desireable mate. However, even a starving mom can produce a functional female. So instead of risking the production of a sub-par male, the body opts to try again for a female that will probably have greater success over her lifetime.
At its most basic and brutish, even short girls can get a lot of dates. But in most human societies, short males are not considered as desireable.
So to address Eric- all the sperm in the world doesn’t save you if you never have sex with anyone.

Amanda commented on Dec 22 09 at 12:14 pmEric, did you even read what you wrote? You just made the perfect argument on why to produce more females. Males can mate 24/7/365 and a female only has the opportunity to get pregnant once per month and then once pregnant they are out of the mating pool from 9 months to whenever their menstrual cycle returns and when you exclusively breastfeed that can be many more months. You would need way more females vs. males to successfully repopulate.

For the survival of the species it would be more advantageous to produce females, to propogate your genes it would be more advantageous to produce males. Buying more bulls doesn’t get you more calves, only more cows gets you more calves. If propagation of a set genes is the question, any bull is related to more calves than is any single cow. I’m probably not as dumb as you seem to think I am, successful reproduction is how I make my living.

Eric commented on Dec 28 09 at 10:25 amGood grief! Does no one grasp this! I didn’t argue against that Cole! Comstock said that evolution favors me and mine. That means MY genes, not the most babies. If I produce a boy, he can father dozens of babies a year making my genes spread far and wide. If I produce a female, she can produce 1.2 babies per year. Its how you frame the question. Is the evolutionary principle expansion of the species, or propagation of you genes? Cole, yeah, more females makes more babies possible; but the one male will have more genetic influence on the population than any of the females. My arguement, has been, and still is with Comstock’s quote “if your genes want to continue their existence, they’d have more luck if they found themselves in a girl rather than a boy when times are tough.” The question is a me-and-mine gene selection (favors males) or a population growth selection (favors females).
