elizabeth poblete weightlifter gives birth while training Olympian Gives Birth While Lifting WeightsChilean Olympic weightlifter Elizabeth Poblete had no idea she was pregnant. So she was pretty surprised when, during a training session — for weightlifting! — she had a baby.

The very tiny boy — doctors say he was three months premature — was rushed to the hospital in Sao Paulo, where Poblete lives,  just after birth, as was the 22-year-old new mother Poblete.

The boy, who weighed 2.25  pounds, remains on a respirator in intensive care. Poblete has been released.

Poblete, who came in 12th in the Beijing Olympics, reportedly told the media that she could not pay for treatment for her son and was therefore released from the hospital. But the hospital denies those reports and said they will continue to care for the boy until he can be released.

So how did a 165-pound athlete not know even suspect she was having a baby? Some speculate that she was likely used to not having a period. I wonder if all that literal heavy-lifting had anything to do with the baby’s premature birth. I can’t help but also wonder about steriods and hormones and other performance enhancing drugs.

In any case, Poblete reported not feeling well the week prior to this surprise birth. She was practicing lifts at a training facility in Sao Paulo for an upcoming event when she went into labor.

If she didn’t even know she was preggo I can’t imagine this baby’s going to grow up with a very attentive mother…

Come on, haven’t you ever seen that show on TV, I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant?

Oh my goodness. She was not taking anything to thwart off pregnancy? I know I pay close attention to my body and would notice any sort of changes. She must be over doing her weight lifting regimen to not feel a pregnancy. The medication I hope does not affect the child too badly in the long run. Bless that baby’s heart.
