Kids’ H1N1 Vaccine Recalled
My head? It’s spinning.
As if it wasn’t enough to track down swine flu shots for the kids, trucking to different clinics depending on their ages, and then doing it all over again for the second shot as close to 21 days after the first as possible — all while reading conflicting reports about whether it’s actually necessary, whether this isn’t just a mild little bug, whether this whole Swine Flu/H1N1 thing isn’t just a big ol’ media event.
As if all that wasn’t enough, now there’s this: health officials are recalling 800,000 doses of the kids’ H1N1 vaccine.
This is not a safety recall. Rather, quality tests indicate that the vaccine may not be potent enough to protect against the virus. But wait! They’re also not saying to re-vaccinate.
The Centers for Disease Control notified doctors on Tuesday of the recall, which involves 800,000 doses made by Sanofi Pasteur. The doses are pre-filled syringes given to children age 6 months to 3 years old.
Okay, now, for more confusion. While the potency is now in question, officials are saying children who received them don’t need to be re-vaccinated, since initial tests at the time they shipped indicated they were good enough. Officials suspect the potency waned over time.
Four lots of the shots have been recalled. Those lots were shipped out, according to the CDC, all over the nation. No H1N1 lots were shipped from Sanofi Pasteur after the defect was discovered.
The CDC tells parents they do have to take any action, other than to complete the two-shot series.
No word on whether we should also cross our fingers.
