original christmas carols Best Christmas DVDs for the KidsTis the season for the holiday TV special, but as one parent confessed to me recently – it’s hard choosing which night to keep the kids up and which specials to forego. True, there’s always the DVR, but what happens when you want a wintry tale on a too-hot summer day?

Stock up on these DVDs for the kids over the holidays and keep them around for repeated viewing throughout the year:

The Original Christmas Classics. Just as the name describes, this has seven of the most popular Christmas specials packed into one fabulous DVD set. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,  Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus is Coming to Town are the highlights, but the addition of The Little Drummer boy, Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, Cricket on the Hearth and Frosty Returns takes this beyond the TV and into classic territory. The sturdy box set (set up like a hardcover book, which is invaluable when it comes to kid handling), there’s a bonus holiday CD tucked in there that makes for perfect Christmas cookie background noise.

Charlie Brown Christmas Combo Pack. The Charlie Brown Christmas Tree has never looked this good. Remade in Hi-Def Blu-Ray, with a standard DVD included plus a digital copy, your kids will do their Snoopy dance when it arrives.

The Polar Express 3D. When it drove into the station in 2004, The Polar Express earned instant classic status thanks in no small part to the book from whence it came. A re-release late last year, the 3D version in Blu-Ray or traditional DVD is flying off shelves this season as everyone needs that extra reason to believe.

Yogi’s First Christmas. A special from 1980 that hasn’t gotten much airtime recently, this is a blast from the past for eighties kids who are now trying to share their favorites with their kids. Released this year on DVD, it’s a great way to introduce kids to Hanna Barbera. Next stop – Boomerang.

A Miser Brothers Christmas. They were the highlight for many kids in the Year Without a Santa Claus, and now they have no choice but to work together. Heat Miser and Snow Miser have to save Christmas!
