Myths Your Mom Just Made Up Because She Said So
Don’t eat Pop Rocks and Coke. Don’t swim after eating.
Don’t sit too close to the television. Dry your hair before you go out. If you pee in the pool, the water will change color and everyone will think you’re a baby and you’ll never go to prom.
I actually remember a few of these commands from on high, mostly the TV thing and the eating and swimming thing. In fact, I made my daughter stay out of a friend’s pool after a barbecue on a hot day, just because some garbled piece of information floating around the ether of my brain.
Myths. All myths.
Danielle Samaniego over at Divine Caroline had a great article the other day, debunking a fair number of these erroneous tidbits of “wisdom” that have been passed down for generations. Take gum for instance. I spent my entire life thinking gum basically never left your body if you swallowed it, and from time to time I worried that I had a knot of Big League Chew stalking around my lower intestine, waiting to strike. When I gave my daughter her first piece of gum a few months ago, I made sure I looked her squarely in the eyes and instructed, “Do. Not. Eat it.” It must have been really fun for her.
Now I feel like such a tool. According to the article, gum passes along just as smoothly as most everything else.
Says Danielle, “This urban legend’s roots are hard to pinpoint, but Snopes found that the “warning” likely stems from gum being labeled “indigestible.” It may not break down in the digestion process, but gum will definitely pass out of your system as quickly as everything else.”
Awesome. I see a helping of Hubba Bubba in my future.
Check out the article. You’ll be surprised at the little walk down memory lane and, just possibly, wonder how on earth you ever let your mom get away with being such a liar.
