Senate Blocks Abortion Amendment – Morning News

303237 health care don t kill seniors 150x150 Senate Blocks Abortion Amendment Morning NewsSenators voted to block an abortion amendment to the health care bill that had been proposed by Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson. The amendment would have banned “insurance companies operating in proposed insurance exchanges from offering abortion coverage to anyone receiving a government subsidy,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle. I’ve been meaning to write about this for awhile now, and maybe I still will, but here’s my point. Abortion is legal. Blocking a legal medical procedure is wrong. In fact, blocking a legal medical procedure should be illegal.

Death penalty news from Ohio. Romell Broom’s execution in September was “botched”, prompting the state to switch to a one-injection system. (The failed attempt used a “three-drug method”.) Now Romell is arguing in court that to it is unconstitutional for the state to try and kill him again, no matter how few needles they plan on using. That did not stop the state from killing 51-year-old convicted murderer Kenneth Biros on Tuesday morning. (AP) Here’s a video describing the whole thing.

Guess what today is. “Um… Wednesday?” Well, yes. It is Wednesday. This particular Wednesday “marks one year since former Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s arrest on federal corruption charges,” according to the Chicago Tribune. I recorded my little tribute to B-Rod awhile back, set to the tune of “My Sharona.”

But as usual, the real thing is better. Here is B-Rod doing Karaoke. Singing Elvis. Really. How can you not love this guy? I mean, other than the whole “he might be guilty of selling a Senate seat” thing.

With the abortion amendment from the House, I think a lot of it had to do, aside from ideological basis, that a lot of taxpayers are horrified for what their money is going to. Think about it, you obviously agree with abortion being available, but let’s assume you’re a liberal in other respects: what if your tax money was going to “shock therapy” to cure gays? what if it was going to send kids off to a religious camp you don’t agree with?

I realize abortion is a very, VERY touchy issue, but please try to break rank and see the other side. (And for the record, I wouldn’t want my money going for abortion or shock therapy).

That being said, it will be interesting to see what sort of legislation makes it out of Congress. I don’t know how familiar you are with the process, but a bill passes one house, in this case, the House, then goes to the other, in this case the Senate. Now, after ea. house has passed their version, it must go to a JOINT committee, to bang out a bill that both houses agree on.

I’m wondering how this is going to play out… the House OK’d the Abortion Amendment, but (I think) kept the public option; the Senate did the opposite. They’ll cancel ea. other in the joint committee.

I appreciate your comment and understand your point. What I’m saying though is that we are talking about blocking money for something that is legal. The comparison of shock therapy for gay people doesn’t really work. There are a lot of things that taxpayers don’t want their money going to, including various wars and bailouts. But that’s not how our government works. To my mind, it isn’t about what someone agrees or disagrees with, it’s about the fact that abortion is, in fact, legal. Thanks for the comment, you’ve reminded me that I wanted to write something about this topic.
