Popeye Creator Segar Born December 8
If anyone was wondering why Popeye was on the Google homepage today, Entertainment Weekly has the answer.
It turns out that December 8 “is the birthday of Popeye creator E.C. Segar, born 115 years ago,” according to EW.com. Popeye is of course the sailor man. “I yam what I yam and that’s all that I yam.”
It’s amazing to think of how long the character has been around. But he doesn’t seem to have the staying power that, say, Mickey Mouse does. I don’t think my kids are particularly aware of Popeye. I think he’s mostly a nostalgia act at this point.
Here is some video of a black and white Popeye cartoon from 1936. These cartoons were fairly violent, but the violence was less intense than what is on kids’ TV today. Not saying that’s a bad thing, but it is different.
