Zhu Zhu Hamsters Are Hot … But Are They Safe?

zhu zhu Zhu Zhu Hamsters Are Hot ... But Are They Safe?Zhu Zhu Pets Hamsters are the must-have, can’t-find toy of this Christmas season. But this weekend, a consumer group said that the toys may not be safe for kids, a claim that Zhu Zhu toymakers were quick to deny.

The “hot” factor of the Zhu Zhu Pets Hamsters drew the attention of consumer group Good Guide. The company, which rates toys for safety, play value, and “green” factor says that it found too-high levels of a chemical called antimony in the Mr. Squiggles toy, on its hair and nose. The group says antimony was measured at up to 106 ppm on the toy, exceeding the legal acceptable limit of 60 ppm.

On Saturday, Cepia LLC, the company that makes the pets, issued a statement strongly defending the toy. “All our products are subjected to several levels of rigorous safety testing conducted by our own internal teams, as well as the world’s leading independent quality assurance testing organization, and also by independent labs engaged by our retail partners,” Cepia CEO Russ Hornsby said in a statement. “The results of every test prove that our products are in compliance with all government and industry safety standards.”

Cepia LLC plans to share their testing data with Good Guide in hopes they can sort the issue out. If you bought a Zhu Zhu pet, or are planning to, will Good Guide’s findings affect your purchases?

We have a bunch in hiding for Christmas morning.. don’t plan on taking them back just yet… I don’t rely on just one testing… Look at Consumer Reports.. They claimed Graco seats failed a few years ago and they didn’t. They claimed Orbit seats failed and they didn’t even have them properly installed. If more testing from other places shows it, I’ll take them away and replace with something safe.
