Glenn Beck’s Christmas Book for Kids? Ew.
Let me be clear: Glenn Beck is a disgusting human being. I say this not because I disagree with him politically — I spend lots of time with people who I disagree with politically and I think they’re perfectly lovely human beings (hi, neighbors!).
No, Glenn Beck is a disgusting human being because he says dangerous things — racist things, xenophobic things, incindiary things about killing filmmakers, for example — and, unless he’s calling the president a racist, he gets away with saying these things.
He argues with his critics that he’s only being entertaining, while insisting to his adoring, ill-informed and tightly wound listeners that he’s speaking the truth. Those things boost ratings, which boost his wealth. Being focused only on what makes his life better and happier — the boosted ratings/boosted income — ensures every payday is Clear Channel Christmas for Glenn Beck.
So it’s funny that he has penned a children’s book, reviewed here at Double X, about remembering the Christmas spirit. Christmas is not about the gifts, it’s about people, giving, kindness, consideration of others.
Here’s KJ Dell’Antonia’s synopsis of Beck’s The Christmas Sweater:
Blond, freckled Eddie wants a bike for Christmas, but his Santa-like grandpa tells him that a sweater knitted by his mother would be the best gift of all, because it would hold within its fibers the love of his family. Eddie falls asleep and dreams that in his sweater, all of his favorite Christmas memories come to life. The next morning, when he finds the coveted bike under the tree, he announces that what he’d really hoped for is … a sweater.
Dell’Antonia says the book isn’t that bad, a little heavy-handed but, hell, so are most other books delving into the sentiment of Christmas. I haven’t read it; she could be right. But I won’t separate the radio gas-bag Beck from his “art” and give him a pass in the spirit of the holidays. My kids don’t need Glenn Beck’s white Christmas to be reminded new toys aren’t fun if they’re purchased with the spoils of hating on others. Oh, wait, that’s not the point of the book.

Joy commented on Dec 03 09 at 10:17 pmYou have a very weird spirit of Christmas. Especially if you haven’t even read the book. If you haven’t read it, you have no right giving a book review on it.
David commented on Dec 04 09 at 10:19 amGo ahead and give your money to Glenn Beck. He needs it and you don’t. Beck is no idiot. His rantings are controversial for a reason – HE GETS RICHER FROM IT. Glenn Beck is making money hand over fist from people that would rather give it to him than spend it on themselves or their families. GLENN BECK is a TV Personality. ITS NOT REAL FOLKS. ITS TV! WAKE UP!
Amanda commented on Dec 04 09 at 2:12 pmIf had the same attitude about boycotting liberal blowhards in the arts as you have about conservatives, I’d never be able to go to another movie, listen to another song (unless it’s country), or watch another tv show again!

let alone a whole hour?
