Bad Dad – Man in Jail After Locking Kids in Trunk for Fun (VIDEO)
A Falls River, Massachusetts was arrested last week after eye witnesses saw him lock his two sons, ages 6 and 3, into the trunk of his Pontiac Trans Am while he stepped into a sailing shop to run an errand.
Michael Monahan, 35, left his children alone for several minutes while he shopped, until onlookers called police. The reportedly distraught father told police that locking his kids in the trunk was a “game” that the boys enjoyed playing.
Playtime ended with dad in handcuffs, though. Monahan is out on bail now, but he missed spending the Thanksgiving holiday with his kids. In fact, he’s not allowed to see his children — who are in the custody of their mother — at all, at least until his next court date on Januray 19.
There are two possible scenarios here. One is that he’s a careless twit who thought it would be funny to lock his kids in the trunk while he went off to buy parts for his sailboat.
The other that this really was a fun game for the boys. Maybe they’ve played it in the driveway before, with Dad standing nearby. Maybe it’s one of those cars where the trunk opens to the back seat, and the boys like to crawl in and out. And maybe on this particular day the boys begged and begged and begged, and Monahan — happy about the upcoming holiday and wanting to be the “fun dad” agreed. Dumb. Stupid. Dangerous. But hardly criminal.
But a criminal he is right now, in the eyes of the law. Facing two counts each of reckless endangerment and assault, clearly the fun and games are over. See Monahan in court below.
