New Moon – Kids Warned Not to Skip School for Vampire Movie
Vampire fans on both sides of the Team Edward/Team Jacob fence got a little lesson in what it means to be responsible last week. Orange County school administrators reminded teens that they belonged in class last Friday — the day New Moon hit the big screen — and not in a movie theater.
Now that’s what I call knowing your students well. New Moon fever hit hard and fast, breaking records over the weekend when it eventually hitting $72.7 million on Saturday. Orange County officials predicted this crush of teen fans and reminded their students that Friday was, in fact, not a national holiday and that they’d be marked truant if they chose to skip school.
“I would think the best time to see the movie is in the evening, so it’s a ‘bad’ idea to miss school,” Mark Eliot, the spokesman at Tustin Unified School District, told UPI.
I guess that depends on who you ask. The districts weren’t just worried about their students’ collective learning; the schools lose up to $40 for every student absent.
