Dan Zanes Takes On Broadway Today
With his wacked out hairdo and his amazing ensembles, Dan Zanes is the closest thing kids have to a rock god. And now Zanes is walking the streets of legends.
Dan Zanes new album, 76 Trombones, hits stores today, and Babble took a listen.
The good news: it’s everything a Dan Zanes album is supposed to be. Quirky, fun and somehow more grounded than most kid music. Considering Zanes’ preference for the term “family music” over “children’s music,” he’s best known for appealing to parents as much as their progeny.
With 76 Trombones he manages to infuse old Broadway classics with that style. Never a fan of the Great White Way until his kids came along and started making requests, Zanes manages the near impossible – turning show tunes into something Broadway-averse will listen to.
If you abhor show tunes, you may just become a convert. If you love them, you’ll be happy to hear he’s brought in Tony Award winners Carol Channing (Hello, Dolly!), Brian Stokes Mitchell (Kiss Me, Kate) and Matthew Broderick (The Producers), plus stars De’Adre Aziza (Passing Strange) and Derick K. Grant (Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk).
Tune in for Manana – a Spanish version of Tomorrow from Annie – and I Don’t Need Anything but You.
