Dads detained, banned from Wal-Mart for Shopping While Gay
Picture this: you’re in the store with your partner and your twins. You get up to the cash register and realize you forgot something. So while your sweetie and your kids finish checking out, you run back and grab the forgotten item. Rather than rejoin the line, you quickly check yourself out through a self-service register and meet them at the front of the store.
Happens all the time, right? This is not exactly suspicious behavior.
But when Joe Paolucci and Thomas Hitchcock tried to leave their local Wal-Mart with their boys after doing just that, they were detained by store security.
First, they were asked to show a receipt for the stray item (a pack of Bic lighters) that Joe had gone back into the store to pick up. Fine. He showed them the receipt. Now everyone can go home, right? Wrong.
Instead, store employees harrassed them and demanded that they go into a secluded area in the back of the store, without their kids. They were separated from each other and police were called. One of them was handcuffed.
After 45 minutes of this ordeal, the police confirmed that the couple had done nothing wrong. Security video clearly showed them paying for all the items they took from the store.
Wal-Mart bungled their opportunity to apologize gracefully though. Instead a store employee read a formal statement to the family, banning all of them (including the kids!) from all Wal-Mart stores forever. Not like they were really planning to come back for more great customer service, I’m sure.
To add furthur insult to injury, the mega-corp later sent them a letter demanding that they pay restitution for the lighters, more than ten times the original cost. That might almost seem like a fair penalty if they had ever shoplifted them to begin with.
Apparently Shopping While Gay isn’t all that safe at Wal-Mart. So much for their commitment to diversity.

Travis commented on Nov 16 09 at 11:57 amI don’t get it – where does being gay come into the story?
NM` commented on Nov 16 09 at 12:02 pmI get that they were treated completely unfairly, but it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with them being gay. I don’t really see where that factors in.
Stephanie commented on Nov 16 09 at 12:10 pmjust one more great reason to shop at target instead
sj commented on Nov 16 09 at 12:35 pmI’m no fan of Wal-Mart, but what did this have to do with being gay? Sounded like they were “Banned for No Reason,” not “Banned for Shopping While Gay.” Is there a part of the story missing? Did the nondescript “harrassment” consist of the “gay-banning” part of this story? Or is Strollerderby just making up kooky headlines? Sigh, I’ve got to stop coming to this blog. It’s one thing to state an opinion (and hopefully back it up with some interesting, thought-provoking evidence), it’s another to just make up sensational stories or only tell half of the facts.
e commented on Nov 16 09 at 1:04 pmSJ- I read in another article (sorry, but I can’t seem t find it. I guess this is evidence of spending too much time on the internet…) that while the grown ups and kids were separated the kids were being harassed for their dads “lifestyle.” The article didn’t say for sure, but I’m willing to bet the “lifestyle” they were writing about was the gay one.
Robyn commented on Nov 16 09 at 1:22 pmIt seems pretty clear that the men were harassed because of their sexual orientation.
This is another reason not to shop at Wal-Mart. I don’t.
PlumbLucky commented on Nov 16 09 at 1:38 pmUm, I’m by no means a lawyer, but how the hades can Wallyworld demand restitution for something that wasn’t shoplifted? Can’t they be sent a “cease and desist you morons” letter?
What a crock.
ts commented on Nov 16 09 at 1:54 pmI have to agree with SJ this article doesn’t at all prove that wal mart was targeting them for being gay. While I agree the actions were totally wrong, the gayness is accentuated for no reason.
Ali commented on Nov 16 09 at 8:17 pmGay people, tranvestites, hookers and all sorts shop at Walmart everyday. http://www.peopleofwalmart.com
I doubt they were singled out as the only gay couple with kids at that Walmart. I think they did do something suspicious looking and are now trying to sue. They were probably banned because they told them they were going to sue or were abusive to the staff. I cant belive how prejudice people are jumping to the conclusion that Walmart is staffed with homophobes. Prejudice starts at home.
snarky mama commented on Nov 16 09 at 8:20 pmI have to second the recommendation to visit peopleofwalmart.com. That is the funniest/scariest shit I have ever seen. These are the “wrong white people.”
jenny tries too hard commented on Nov 16 09 at 8:40 pmTo tell whether this is discrimination or just Wal-Mart being dickish you would have to look at how often Wal-Mart reacted this way to people who were “uncooperative” after being accused of shoplifting. I’d wager that if you get the powertrip security guard, you’re likely to be badly treated no matter what you’re skin color/gender identity, etc. Have y’all been to Wal-Mart? Gay people, straight people, all kinds of folks shop at Wal-Mart and I would be surprised beyond measure if this was the only gay couple this Wal-Mart served.

Spartic commented on Nov 17 09 at 1:21 amI bet the only thing that this couple did was to get pissy with the Walmart staff for actually knowing their rights.
TolaniLucia commented on Nov 17 09 at 3:51 pmI will shop Target. Walmart has nothing for me. My father has been trying to sway me away from the mart for sometime now even though I have only been twice.
brandon commented on Jan 25 10 at 1:56 pmsomeone asked why the gay came in? it comes in because they were targeted by security for being gay. I lost my management position when it became widely known I was gay. My manager sabotaged my deparment when an investigation was concluded the results were confidential on my sexual harassment and the sabotage of my department
let it be known GLBT you are not welcome at walmart

B commented on Aug 24 10 at 10:52 amThese men were not ‘followed because they were gay’. It wasn’t until they stated they were gay that it was known. Although I do not agree with wal-mart as a company for their practices and management style or lack thereof, I have to post this reply.
As a person nearby when the INDIVIDUAL (singular, not the family) was asked to help while they attempted to determine why the merchandise wasn’t paid for (human error vs computer malfunction) I get to deal with the reading the rage against the basher mentality of the public who outcry against the one sidedness this story, because the wonderful world of Wal-Mart refused to make any public statements.
Be sure though, EVERY second of that was reviewed to be within the procedures of the ‘company’ and the law of the state. They would have rather had to fire those involved (as stated by members of management) and claim they were ‘rogue’ than have to supply them with the legal team that they had to pay for. Management had even been overheard stating that fact.
The story passed by the ‘victim’ fails to show the real story, yet a glorified ‘bashing’ message.
There’s no real news in reality, so apparently it was twisted to suit the audience. Started with a simple “Sir, will you assist while we review why the merchandise wasn’t paid for” and was answered with the yelling of “you’re only doing this because I’m gay, you tattooed high school drop out”. I’ll give ya one guess who maintained composure. Two minutes to review video to determine if it was possibly a computer error with the ONE person asked to enter the office to review would have shown the MULTIPLE items that were not paid for appeared to be the fault of the machine/scanning method of the user. However when you ask for assistance to review the footage, and are told “you better just call the police” by the person whom has the things that aren’t paid for, it’s much easier to make that call and pass the investigation to the Deputies.
edro commented on Mar 19 11 at 8:09 amIf you are anywhere in the Pacific NW dont go there. Go to FRED MEYER instead. Better quality products, excellent customer service (no stupid people) And their prices routinely beat walmarts especially on foods. Plus some have gas & that comes from Shell. OOOOHH!!! and get this! They are UNION. So how is walmart better? And their deli food is awesome. I am willing to even pay a little more if i had too for the sheer difference in experience. I cant tell you how many times I’ve been in walmart when there is a hundred people in line and only TWO checkstands open but four or five employees and managers chatting it up at the front. Seriously PHUQ WALMART. I only ever go there out of necessity and always try to bring stuff back once I repurchase it elsewhere. Its even worse in the south though.
