Kansas Teacher Fired Over Florida Joke

florida map sm250 Kansas Teacher Fired Over Florida JokeWhile most eighth graders would agree that sexual innuendo and risque jokes are just part of being a teenager, they are usually shared by classmates, not teachers.  Likewise, getting in trouble at school for an off-color joke is generally the job of kids, not faculty.  But in a science class at Mission Valley Middle School in Prairie Village, Kansas, it was the teacher being inappropriate and the punishment he received was much  harsher than detention.

Ryan Haraughty, who has worked in the Shawnee Mission school district for over ten years, was fired last week after he made a joke about the size and shape of the state of Florida.  His off-the-cuff remark was in response to a student who commented that a hand-drawn map of the United States showed Florida a little larger than it should be.  His response:  “Florida got excited.”

While I am sure that elicited a few chuckles from the class, Haraughty admits he made a mistake and now regrets his lapse in judgment.  But despite Haraughty’s claims that the joke got him fired, school officials hint that his termination has been a long time coming and that Haraughty is misleading the public about the reasons for the firing.  In a statement released by a Shawnee Mission official, the district claims their decision was based on “numerous incidents over an extended period of time.”

That may be, but I don’t think the district needs a better reason.  The joke was clearly inappropriate and had I been in that class, I would have been made very uncomfortable by such an obvious sexual reference.  But not all Haraughty’s pupils agree. A group of about 50 students (all boys in this photo) cut class to demonstrate in support of their teacher.

What do you think?  If this truly was a one-time incident, did the district overreact?

“Meep” Banned at High School | Strollerderby commented on Nov 14 09 at 10:22 am

If my daughter would have been in that class I would have run up there and demanded he was fired. Teachers make mistakes just like the rest of us, and most are totally forgivable. A little too harsh with the “Don’t talk in class” scolding… fine, kids that age can be really annoying. Sexual innuendo with pre-teens… you lose your job.

And now, for some totally inappropriate quotes from my high school French teacher: [To fellow student Brian J.] “Hey, it’s B.J.! We all know what that stands for right?” At this point we students are just shocked that he would say this (nobody called the kid BJ), and the teacher says, “No! Get your heads out the gutter! It stands for Brian J(last name).” Ummm, okay.

A second time, to my thespian friend Sherryll: “So, Sherryll, do you remember your first time?” “WHAT?!” “No, I meant your first time on stage…”

All true, and so many more. What a perv. But he was tenured, so nothing happened.

The district overreacted. My kids went to that school and one of my kids, a daughter, had Mr. Haraughty as a science teacher. And it is not all boys who are protesting. And parents are protesting too, a lot of them. More than 300 people showed up at the board meeting to protest his firing. He is a great teacher, one who inspires kids and makes them want to learn, which is more than can be said for a lot of teachers these days. It looks like you’ve already decided that he was in the wrong, but what this is all about is the principal does not like him and has been looking for a reason to fire him. Unfortunately, the principal is more interested in her status than the kids. I don’t think the district expected the backlash they have received from firing this teacher. We want the teacher back and the principal and school board fired. In fact, there is a petition being signed to that effect.

In this case, I think it’s harmless. I mean, it could have just slipped out and then he thinks, “Wow, did I just say that out loud?” I know it’s easy, if you’re not totally focused, to say something inappropriate.

Robyn commented on Nov 13 09 at 12:58 pm

I think that by itself, the comment wouldn’t have been enough to get this teacher fired. It was unprofessional and showed a lapse in judgment to be sure, but everyone makes mistakes and it is really hard to “turn off” your own sense of humor in front of a classroom. I would know this, as I am a teacher myself. Everyone slips and says something stupid at least once or twice in their careers. However, I think that the school is most likely telling the truth about how this is just the latest in a long line of inappropriate instances from this guy. Teachers can’t get fired at the drop of a hat (unless they do something seriously bad of course). The school has most likely spent a long time recording incidents and getting the proper paperwork filed to get him out. I think parents might be surprised to know how many bad teachers keep their jobs because it is too difficult and time consuming for school administrators to fire them.

I have also taught children and in 7 years of teaching I have slipped and said “Damn it!”, “What the hell?” and “Crap!” But never ever have I made a SEXUAL comment to a child. If a teacher has a problem keeping his sexual comments to himself while around students than I think it’s really best he find other work. If it’s true that this isn’t the first time this has happened and this was just the last straw, than I’m saddened by what’s tolerated of teachers at this school.

Diane commented on Nov 13 09 at 3:10 pm

Um, are we not sexual beings? What the hell is wrong referring to a perfectly natural bodily function? No wonder our kids are so messed up about sex; we’ve got to absolutely ban any reference to it or our poor litt’luns will be DAMAGED! Grow up, everyone. Your 13 year old has thought or done much more than you’ve imagined with their sexual parts. It’s not like the guy was talking about a particular student’s penis, or directing the comment to a girl-student being exciting.

Sherry commented on Nov 13 09 at 4:31 pm

No, it is not a long line of offenses. The principal is not popular with the kids. Mr. Haraughty is very popular. She is jealous of him. She has been looking for a way to get rid of him. As I said, my kids all went to this school and one of them had Mr. Haraughty as a teacher. I hope he files a lawsuit against the school district.

Jennifer commented on Nov 13 09 at 5:20 pm

Your post is a bit inflammatory. Mr. Haraughty drew an outline of the United States. Florida was out of proportion. Some kids started to snicker (of course they did…this is 8th grade, after all) and Mr. Haraughty responded that Florida was just excited. He was trying to downplay the class response and in doing so, said something he obviously regrets. But to lose his job over it is unjustifiable. He’s a talented, passionate, beloved teacher who has a gift for connecting with students and getting them to not only understand, but enjoy, science. Part of this gift is being able to relate to them. Yes, it may have pulled him across a very gray line, and that’s regrettable. But only because there are people out there who are unwilling to use something benign like this as an opportunity to teach kids about crossing lines, the power of apology, and working together to solve something so the outcome benefits everyone involved. In this case, anything but that has happened.

Robin commented on Nov 13 09 at 7:19 pm

My daughter is one of his students, by the way. Nothing would make me happier than to have her back in his classroom.

Robin commented on Nov 13 09 at 7:20 pm

I teach 8th graders. They are not preteens but teenagers. They make comments with sexual innuendo all the time… even with their teachers.
Although they tend to believe we won’t understand what they mean.

He was fired because of something else… this isn’t a reasonable reason for termination.

Lisa commented on Nov 13 09 at 8:41 pm

8th Grade Science teachers are frequently in charge of teaching sex education. While this teacher apparently wasn’t formally instructing the students on the arousal of male gonads, students would have been taught about erections in health well before 8th grade. Making sure eight graders understand the science behind an erection is actually a health benchmark in some states –It’s a basic component of health education. These were 8th graders not 3rd graders. I think it was a pretty benign comment.

Here is a petition being signed by students AND PARENTS who want to remove the principal and the school board over this. The school board is elected. The parents are standing up with their kids saying we want Mr. Haraughty rehired and the principal and the school board out.

CommentsThis was part of a campaign (and I am not given to hyperbole) on the part of the principal to rid herself of this teacher. He is a respected teacher in the district among the teachers, students and parents. He was escorted out, in the middle of class, with a policeman and the principal. Over 300 parents showed up at the school board meeting where comments were taken. This is not a man who has a history of subordination, sexual inappropriateness or any other classroom problems. I am not a teacher, student or parent, or relative of Mr Haraughty’s, but a concerned community member.

Deborah commented on Nov 15 09 at 9:53 pm

I don’t think that was that inappropriate. Like someone else mentioned, he didn’t say anything about a particular student, just a (bad) joke about a body function. I had so many teachers say so much worse, starting in 6th grade. (If you must know that 6th grade teacher was loved by all of his students and he really got us interested in a lot of things.) The majority of our male teachers would line up against the gym wall during pep rallys, right behind the female vollyball players who were all bent over. They didn’t need to be there and everyone talked about why they were there since the first year I started attending (in 5th grade). Forget h.s. teachers. All the male teachers made inappropriate jokes, but that’s because teenagers respond to it. Teenagers like inappropriate jokes because that stuff is always on their minds.

I would think a warning first, then firing for a second transgression.

Comments Why can’t we get back to common sense and focus on the reprehensible things that go on in schools that truly are unsafe and hurt people!!!We are all sexual beings. My son was suspended for two weeks for snapping the bra strap (that was sticking out) of a girl in his class. She was not upset but it was scolol policy and he ended up losing his position as editor of the yearbook over this! Never been in trouble before!!Of course, they have to draw the line on inappropriate behavior but Really???

Susan Salzgeber commented on Nov 30 09 at 10:37 am

Holy Over-reaction batman! Seriously, much too harsh of a punishment. Sure, it may have been inappropriate, but to be fired over one comment like that is even more inappropriate. Sure, give the teacher a warning, tell him not to do it again. Start the paper trail, whatever you have to do to prove that this teacher is making a “sexually hostile environment.” But to jump from one slipped up comment to losing his job doesn’t make a lick of sense. And seriously, the kids were all probably laughing at the comment thinking their teacher was funny/cool, and not traumatized forever like their parents think their “babies” should be.

I love how people comment when they know nothing. Take it from a parent who has now had 5 years worth of exposure to this principal - she’s a total whack job. 1/3 of the staff have put in for transfers, and last year, we lost 11 of the 34 teachers in the building - 100% because of this principal. Haraughty’s comment was really the only one he made. All other incidents in his file were falsely created by this administrator (who, by the way, has a very personal relationship with her immediate boss, the asst. superintendant) She has been asked to resign by the executive board of the PTA. She has over 100 complaints filed against her which include falsifying evaluations and creation of a hostile work environment. Mr. Haraughty is a devoted teacher who has guided students into the medical, chemical and engineering fields with his amazing teaching style. Your children should be so lucky as to have a Ryan Haraughty in their lifetime.

It’s interesting to hear more of the story through the comments. Even the circumstances of the event–the snickering by the students, the fact that it was clear the students were already thinking along sexual lines and the teacher picked up on that–I can see how a teacher would use a little humor to defuse the situation and then move on. Had he stayed on it, initiated it himself, talked repeatedly about this with a single student in a conference, all these things could have shown bad judgment. That he responded in what is really an incredibly mild way probably makes him more accessible to students than had he prudishly ignored or chastised teens whose minds are on sex half the time anyway. Why are we so hung up on acting like sex, and sexual functions, are not a part of life? There are much better lines to be drawn as to what would be clearly inappropriate. When people get their hands slapped for clear sexual imposition or are let go so that the problem can just move somewhere else–now that’s something to get bothered about.

10 years and he says: Florida got excited and you want to destroy his career and life? We need to connect a camera to your life - your lack of grace and harsh reflection on life, plus that of responders is ridiculous. One has to wonder what the rest of the story is in this case. Gasp, I bet it ruined the ears and morals of every child in the room. I’m not arguing it was okay or appropriate - but I’m tired of thin-skinned Americans over-reacting to everything. Grow up and get a life - just like you want the teacher to do.
