A Rawk Concert That’s Just for Kids
Sometimes you have to just lay down and take one for the team. That’s what I was expecting when I agreed to take my daughter to the Imagination Movers concert for Babble.
To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. Who knew a bunch of guys on a Disney Channel show for the toddler set could actually rock? As an hair flying, mid-air jumping, air guitar strumming, long drum solos and hard guitar riffs rock?
When Babble talked to Mover Scott Durbin a few weeks ago, he explained the band started playing because they’re parents – and they all wanted music that they could stand themselves when they were listening to it with the kids. With influences (and references) from Van Halen, Journey and the like, they succeeded in creating music that’s catchy, creative and just hard enough to make parents bob their heads and acquiesce to the requests for everyone to get on their feet.
Adult references (at the New York Times Square show there was a nod to the recent World Series win a la a Hideki Matsui comment, a karate kick from Mover Rich earned him a “Johnny sweep the leg” command and more) are again just enough to make parents laugh without removing the show from the kid realm.

Because it is still a show that’s all about the kids – with the Movers frequent jumps off the stage and out into the audience, directions to the kids to help sing along and dance and a concert that’s built around the show’s central themes. An idea emergency crops up, the kids help solve it, and they’re comforted by the familiarity of the show in what may well be their first rock concert setting.

The Movers still have a long tour across the states to get through, so you can check out a city near you.
