Rich or Rehab: Laura From ‘Family Matters’
It takes a very special girl to win the heart of Steve Urkel. And Laura Winslow — as played by Kellie Williams during nine seasons of TV’s “Family Matters” — was just that sort of special girl.
Williams, a native of Forestville, Md., in the Washington D.C. area, dabbled in modeling and theater before she snagged her starring role on the ABC (and later, briefly, CBS) sitcom at the age of 13. So what has happened to her since the days of laugh tracks and listening to Urkel repeatedly ask the question, “Did I do that?” Let’s find out.
Post-”Family Matters,” which ended its TV run in 1998, Williams went to UCLA where, according to her imdb bio, she majored in psychology. She also continued acting, popping up in TV shows such as “Moesha,”
“Girlfriends” and “The Parkers” but never landing anything long-running like her “Family Matters” gig.
In 2003, Williams decided to move back to the D.C. area, where she eventually started an organization called Kellie Williams Programs that introduces kids to the performing arts via after-school programs. (According to this item on people.com and other sources, Williams still leads the organization even though the Web site doesn’t seem to be working at the moment.)
The year 2009 seems to have been a particularly exciting one for Williams. She has guest hosted several episodes of the Style Network’s Clean House, standing in for Niecy Nash. And more importantly, she got married in September to Hannibal Jackson, a fellow D.C. area native, devout Christian and the head of a government contracting company. Based on the Washington Post’s coverage of the wedding, it looked like quite a joyous event. Jackson even wept when he saw his bride coming down the aisle. (Awww…)
And since I know you’re wondering, no, Jaleel White (aka Urkel) did not attend. But Telma Hopkins, who played Williams’s aunt on “Family Matters,” was there. In the end, it always comes back to “Family,” doesn’t it?
