Mom of Baby Hit by Train: “He Is Destined to Do Something”
Even at a distance and as blurry as it was, the video was horrifying enough to make any parent’s — heck, any person’s — blood run cold: A mom and baby are waiting for an oncoming train when the stroller starts to roll. The mother stumbles, and the stroller falls onto the tracks and gets run over by the train.
Earlier this week that mother, Shweta Verma, a dentist and mom to 6-month-old Saurish, talked with Today’s Matt Lauer about the incident.
In a voice that says she’s still shaken up from their ordeal, Verma explains what happened: She made sure that Saurish was securely buckled into his stroller, then she released the brake as the train approached so she’d be ready to board. Then she reached down for a second to adjust her clothing, and the stroller rolled away. Verma tells Lauer:
“And it was just maybe just for a fraction of second, I just took my hands off from the pram, and it happened so quickly, in the blink of an eye. Before I could get hold of the pram handle, it was off the platform.”
It’s probably a moment she’s still reliving every time she closes her eyes.
Miraculously, Saurish was unhurt. Verma says that a young man jumped down to the tracks below and that she went with him. When Saurish was pulled out, he let out a cry — a sound that Verma says filled her with relief:
“We both went down under the train on the tracks, and as we were approaching toward the pram, I could hear him crying. I was relieved and feeling that my boy is alive. My son is alive. And he’s crying. And to my knowledge, crying is good.”
As it turns out, crying was a good sign. Saurish suffered only a scratch to the head, and his mother credits his stroller with saving his life. Watch the video below to hear this mother share her amazing story.
