tianas cookbook Books Bode Well for Princess and the FrogIf the pile of storybooks sent my way by the folks at Random House are any indication, Princess Tiana might be the best role model for our kids to come out of the Disney vault.

With my daughter breathlessly awaiting The Princess and the Frog debut in theaters, we’ve spent the last several nights reading the Tiana books to satisfy her cravings. The good news?

Going by the books alone, Tiana is one hard-working princess. Since her dad passed away, the New Orleans girl works all day long in a restaurant as a waitress. She’s saving up for the restaurant she and her father had dreamed of. It’s a nice change of pace from the witless princess waits for dashing prince to come save her. And did we mention the prince in this case is a bit useless, at least for a good chunk of the story line?

I’ll hold out my judgment until I’ve seen the movie, but the books are worth a read for kids who are jonesing for their princesses:

The Princess and the Frog: Tiana’s Cookbook. A pick from the Disney Press, this is a real cookbook that cements the link between princess with a taste for real life and your kid. Easy recipes with a New Orleans flavor (think po’ boys and beignets), the book dishes up quality time for parent and little princess with some good food at the end.

The Princess and the Frog: Read-Aloud Storybook. A hardcover edition, this covers the story in detail from beginning to end. Get it for ages four through eight.

The Princess and the Frog: Step Into Reading. A paperback that’s easy on the pocketbook, this is a good pick for do it myself princess. Kind of like Tiana. Get it for ages four through eight.

Didn’t get all that from the trailer, did you?
