Want a Green Xmas? You Should Probably Start Now

greening the holidays 200x300 Want a Green Xmas? You Should Probably Start NowLook, I know Halloween is not even a week behind us, but if I’ve learned one thing as a parent it’s this: it’s really hard to put off Christmas shopping and not (1) overspend (2) disappoint and (3) feel just really awful about child labor/carbon footprints/wrecking the environment. So, theoretically, I’m starting to plan for the holidays now.

How exactly? Well, I’m not sure, but I’m after a bit of research, here’s what I’ve come up with so far.

Over at SuperEco, they’ve found 10 eco-friendly toys for less than 30 bucks. I’m not saying I’m getting them all, but there are a couple on my list.

The Greenest Dollar had green gifts for grown-ups.

At Healing Lifestyles, they’ve got a list of green holiday tips and links.

Then there’s this list of ideas and instructions for handmade gifts (though, truthfully? I don’t think a pine cone bird-feeder is right for gifting. Just me?)

I can’t guarantee totally green holidays at my house, though I’m thisclose to ordering a heritage ham ($$$$); I swear we’ll only use proper wrapping paper for other people’s gifts; and nothing from “Santa” will require batteries.

Of course, mid-December, I might be approaching the holidays the old-fashioned way: plastic, plastic and more BPA-laden plastic (all requiring batteries and shipped in from China).

How do you plan to make your holidays greener?

Don’t forget to buy used! You don’t need it in a box if Santa sets it up. Check Craigslist first!

Surely there is something in your life with at least a moderate carbon footprint that you plan to get for your self, but that you could forgoe as an offset to that special present for a loved one; that special present that you hesitate to buy because it has a somewhat heavy carbon foot print. Create your own cap and trade.

How is heritage ham green? Is it from some kind of special sustainable farm? Otherwise, I don’t see how ham is green or good. Especially from a pig’s POV.
