Morning News – No Gay Marriage In Maine
Voters in Maine said “No Gay Marriage,” overturning a new same-sex marriage law yesterday. The campaign to overturn the law was a little divisive — people stood in front of polling places and whispered, “You want gay people to get married? What’re you, queer?” in a thick New England accent. (Note: That’s not what happened. As far as I know.) 52.7 percent of Maine voters voted “in favor of the repeal” according to the Boston Globe. In other New England news, you cannot, in fact, get there from here. (Boston.com)
The Supreme Court will take up the question “Can Prosecutors Be Sued By People They Framed?” It’s an interesting case, where law enforcement officials in Council Bluffs, Iowa, were found to have framed two innocent men for murder, sending them to jail for more than 20 years. Now they are being sued because under Iowa law, you can’t sue the state. Is there a “constitutional right not to be framed”? (NPR)
Election news: Bloomberg won a third term as Mayor of New York City, but it was by a fairly slim margin. NBC called it for Bloomberg early last night, then backed off. In the end, he won. (Politico)
Republicans won gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey. This prompted a round of “Democrats are in trouble” from the pundits.
Here’s the thing: this isn’t a mandate on anything. This guy beat that guy. Is it a sign that America prefers heavyset candidates (Christie) to those with beards (Corzine)? I realize there is a desire on both sides to read the tea leaves — or in this case, the tea bags — but let’s calm down here. These two victories mean that the Republican party is on the rise? Really? Democrats may want to, as one of the pundits says in the above video, look at these results and realize that it would be a good idea to get a freakin’ health care bill passed. But let’s not declare a victory for Sarah Palin in 2012 just yet. (L.A. Times, Politico)
