Swine Flu Killed 19 Kids in One Week
The numbers of kids dying from swine flu are climbing in the United States, and last week was a doozy. According to the CDC, nineteen kids died of confirmed cases of H1N1 between Oct. 18 and 24.
That brings the number of kids (everyone under eighteen) killed by swine flu to one hundred fifteen since the pandemic began in April. Sixty-five of those cases have happened since school began (after August 30).
Still an incredibly low number compared to the total U.S. population, but the CDC statistics show the number of hospitalizations and deaths from H1N1 are on the rise, and the swine flu shots are still hard to come by in most states, and despite an announcement by the World Health Organization that kids might need just one dose of the vaccine, the CDC is sticking to its recommendation that kids who receive the shot get a booster several weeks later to shore up their immunity.

Seasonal flu (including H1N1) can be a killer, even for healthy people. I’ve heard today of 2 I know who are either in the hospital or dead. Wash you hands too and don’t go out if you think you’re sick.

I have to call my son’s pediatrician to see if is available in their office since last time they were out. Go get the shot, the bad noise about the vaccine is bigger than the risks of getting it. Like I said, I feel good.

These stats are based on an increase of suspected influenza deaths over a “normal” rate of influenza deaths. Its not surprising that people are more aware of the flu and more likely to suspect the flu -and doctors are merely people.
Every state, that against CDC wishes, is tracking the percentage of “influenza like illness” that actually IS influenza shows that a perfectly average 5-10% of suspected influenza cases are influenza. So unless you are alleging that all the other causes of influenza like illness are also experiencing a pandemic year -there isn’t an influenza pandemic. Its a logical impossibility based on the facts at hand.
Maybe this strain of influenza really is deadlier than usual, or may be causing deaths in the young rather than the old. And maybe it is worse when an 8 year old dies than an 80 year old. But unless we demand testing and facts then we are left with nothing but propaganda. The facts that are known support increased awareness and panic -not deadliness.
