Kids Comics This Week – Shazam

hey kids comics 150x150 crop Kids Comics This Week ShazamSome good ones this week.

For the kids:

  • Batman The Brave And The Bold #10: based on the new cartoon, which is really good. The comic is OK.
  • Billy Batson And The Magic Of SHAZAM #9: Not sure if this title has picked up since the Tiny Titans team of Art Baltazar and Franco has taken over. I always liked Shazam, aka Captain Marvel. (Shazam is the wizard that gives the Marvel Family their powers. And this is a different Captain Marvel than the one who appears in Marvel Comics. But you knew that.)
  • Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #56
  • Spider-Man Newspaper Strips HC: I don’t see me getting these, but for a big fan it could be a treat. The Spidey newspaper strips do tell a story, so it’s not like you’re buying garbage. But I think only a completist or a big time Spider-Man fan should indulge. Maybe it would be good for kids, but at $39.99, the price is a bit steep.
  • Wolverine First Class #20: I need to borrow these from my son. They’re written by Peter David, one of my favorites. I think he’s responsible for the line, “The best way to make two people of one mind is to bash their heads together,” said by the Hulk.
  • Muppet Peter Pan #2: Muppet comics are proving to be very popular.
  • Bart Simpson Comics #50: Mad Magazine artist Sergio Aragones takes over on this issue.
  • Simpsons Classics #22
  • Archie Double Digest #203: Archie leaves Riverdale!
  • Betty & Veronica #244

Might be for the kids:

  • Tales From The Crypt Vol 8 Diary Of A Stinky Dead Kid: Looks like a parody of the popular “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series. Probably not bad but I haven’t seen it myself so it could be scary for little ones.
  • Groo Hogs Of Horder #1: I never read Groo, a popular series drawn by Sergio Aragones (who is now working on Bart Simpson comics. It’s a strange business). So this could be an all-ages title, or not.

Non-kid titles of interest:

  • Jennifer Love Hewitts Music Box #1: Jennifer Love Hewitt writes a comic book. Going out on a limb here, but she may just be lending her name to this project. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I don’t think I’ll be buying this one either way. But don’t let me stop you.
  • Cowboy Ninja Viking #1: Another “let’s put a bunch of geeky-cool-sounding words together” type of titles. It’s possible that I’m being unfair. And perhaps the book really is about a Cowboy, a Ninja, and a Viking (who walk into a bar…).
  • Boys #1 Dynamite Edition: A reprint of the first issue of one of the best comics of the past couple of years.
  • 1000 Comic Books You Must Read: This sounds too nerdy even for me. I like lists, and I’m always interested to read/see/hear work that someone thinks is a “must” in any genre. But 1000? Who has that kind of time?
