heene family sm300x225 Balloon Mom: Why She Fessed UpIn recent weeks, Mayumi Heene, also known as Balloon Mom, has been described as a loving and devoted wife to her husband, Richard Heene. But an ABC News article suggests that the mother at the center of the Balloon Boy hoax might be a little too devoted and raises the question of whether she may in fact be an abused wife suffering at the hands of a domineering husband.

That same article quotes Richard Heene’s former business partner, Barbara Slusser, stating that Mayumi’s Japanese background and history of growing up with an “overbearing and abusive” father made her the perfect choice of wife for  Richard Heene.  Slusser even uses the word “slave” when describing Mayumi’s relationship with her husband.

If Mayumi Heene is truly an abused wife enslaved to a domineering husband, her alleged confession to police that the entire Balloon Boy episode was a hoax concocted by her fame-hungry spouse would seem out of character. Why would she offer up a confession while her husband continued to insist that it was all for real?

Legal experts have a theory:  Mayumi Heene’s love for her children may be stronger than her fear of her husband.  In order to protect her three kids from being taken away from her or having to testify against their father, she is defying her husband and putting her responsibilities as a mother first.

I suspect there is much about Mayumi and Richard Heene that we don’t yet understand.  But if she is indeed the victim of spousal abuse and this Balloon Boy fiasco gave her the push she needed to stand up to her husband, then perhaps it was worth it.
