5-year-old Weightlifting Star Rocks

Now his dad … that’s another story.
I saw the video below making the rounds on Yahoo! last night and immediately I had the same thoughts you probably did: Young kids weightlifting is just unhealthy. And what 5 year old really dreams of getting into the Guinness Book of World Records? Your average 5 year old would probably ask, “What’s a world record?”
Clearly someone is getting Heene with this kid.
But then again, this kid has moves!
Half of the stuff he did is no different than what young boys and girls do every day in gymnastics classes throughout the country — the world, really. His handstands and flips were just amazing, and I had to hand it to whoever taught this kid all these moves. What kid, after all, wouldn’t want his home turned into a gym? What kid wouldn’t want to do a back flip off the kitchen table?
We tell our children no, don’t do that, be careful. But clearly they are capable of some amazing stuff, with a little teaching and a lot of trust. Teaching a kid how to perform a proper backflip seems like an ideal way to spend a rainy day at home.
Now, teaching them to lift what appears to be extremely heavy weights … that’s different.
What do you think of this video?

Looking at this little guy practice and work, I don’t know that you could get him to do that if he didn’t really want to. And I don’t think there’s much wrong with letting him practice like that if that is really what he wants to do.
