Would You Eat Your Placenta In Pill Form?

placenta side1 300x251 Would You Eat Your Placenta In Pill Form?Forget mashing up the placenta into loaf form or that creepy teddy bear. You can now have the little sac that kept baby alive in the form of “placenta pills.”

Thank Gawd for celebrities - otherwise I wouldn’t hear of these creepy, er, curative methods.

Taye Diggs told Jimmy Kimmel that wife Idina Menzel was offered the chance to have the placenta from the birth of son Walker made into tablets. The doula, Diggs said, told them there were “crazy nutrients” in the placenta, and said they could be made up in pill form for Menzel to take every day. She took them up on it. Diggs admitted he thought it was freaky (thank goodness - I need to continue to enjoy my medical soaps and their eye candy):

I’ve got to agree with Jimmy - it does sound like a horror movie here. But some women say they’re better than traditional anti-depressants because the placenta is full of progesterone and estrogen. And the pills don’t look like bits of placenta - they’re more like a traditional gel capsule.

The FDA has scoffed at these claims, and yet there are people who make this part of their living. There’s even a placentapills.com (although it’s under construction with an expected finish date of Oct. 2008 - perhaps placenta pill making isn’t lucrative enough to pay the bills on a website?). And for some, the living is ill-gotten gains - a maternity center making the pills got shut down by the cops in Miami earlier this year.

But the real question here isn’t whether it’s a freaky thing or not. It’s whether it’s worth it. I ate some foods I wouldn’t normally eat while pregnant because they were good for my growing baby. But if you’re taking these pills to help your nursing baby or ostensibly to help yourself, wouldn’t you prefer a little more research behind them?

Well, assuming they don’t treat it with cyanide in the drying and rendering to powder stages, how is this any grosser than frying and eating a placenta straight up? In fact, it is distinctly LESS GROSS. If your not the type to consider eating your own placenta, then the pills might be more appealing, although I think the eating-part-of-my-own-body is the gross part. (I don’t even bite my nails)

There’s people that drink their own urine as a cure-all as well. I doubt there’s anything dangerous about consuming the placenta, and likely some benefits. I still doubt my wife will want to eat her cleanings though, and I certainly cant blame her.

This article is really poorly written and can be summed up as “Yucky-placenta!” Eastern Medicine has long practiced ingestion of the placenta and acupuncturists often recommend it for a host of important reasons. The picture with the story is even intended to elicit an aversion response. The pills look just like herbs, so a better picture would be a bottle of pills. The placenta is a beautiful organ, but I think the author knew that most people would respond to a “graphic” image and a flippant tone.

For the many women dealing with post-partum depression, baby blues, anemia, recovering from surgery, etc this is a very powerful alternative.

Too bad Babble passed up the opportunity to educate for the opportunity to titillate.

Livers are full of nutrients but not good for people to eat because it essentially filters out a lot of toxins too. So does the placenta. Full of toxins and nutrients. You could eat plain dirt and get the same kind of stuff.

Taye Diggs is so hot. That is all.

Oh Mistress, I was waiting for someone to back me up on that one. Elsie - sorry honey, but the placenta ain’t got nothing on Taye when it comes to beautiful.

My wife did this herself at home. Sure the prep-work is gross, though she’s a nurse so it wasn’t as big a deal to her. She uses the gelcaps whenever she feels a cold coming on and it knocks it out flat.

The practice of eating the placenta is hardly new wave or sensational. *shrugs* If someone would prefer to take it in pill form and has found a way to do it that doesn’t ruin the nutrients during the preservation process, kudos to them. Also, +1 for “Taye Diggs is hot.”

Thank you to Eric who pretty much made my point for me! However, I would like to add to it and also speak to the liver comment:
Placenta medicine is not new-it’s not even “new age”. In fact, it is an ancient practice that was lost and is now coming back because of the wisdom it contains. Also worth noting is that all mammals (but whales and camels) consume the afterbirth (kangaroos resorb it). I happen to make a living as a Placenta Encapsulation Specialist and so do many others around the country. I am proud to be part of a network called Placenta Benefits (www.PlacentaBenefits.info), a company dedicated to making placenta encapsulation (and subsequent consumption ; ) as common as birth itself. Our preparation methods are heavily based in Traditional Chinese Medicine, backed by research and we follow strict safe handling procedures including OSHA protocols. Additionally, there is even more research going on right now at the U of NV–thanks to Jodi Selander, PBi founder. Besides the blues, depression (which is a much more common problem than we know since oftentimes women don’t report their depression or even realize they are depressed) and anemia, placenta medicine is also indicated for insufficient lactation meaning that if your milk is not up to par, it will be! Handling a placenta is akin to working with any raw flesh (eh hem, anybody like steak?)–not gross if you are a meat-eater. Some might even say that consuming (one’s own) placenta seems much more normal than chomping on the flesh of another being. It truly is medicine made by your own body! How much more bio-compatible can you get?? And if no infection is present, how much safer can you get? It came out of you! The other great thing about “eating one’s own flesh” is that it is also vegetarian and vegan friendly, so one doesn’t have to miss out because of these dietary practices. Okay, so I think I’ve made my point. If anybody is interested in learning more, I recommend going to the PBi website for lots of articles on the subject, or checking out the PBi blog. Heck, you could even contact a specialist! Basically, don’t knock it because many women have been spared the horror of PPD–and if you’ve experienced it or know someone who has, you know it’s no walk in the park.

As for liver consumption…well I’m about typed out here, but check out the Weston Price Foundation if you want to see the current dietary belief system sent into a tailspin.

Thanks for reading and for having an open mind! Bon apetit!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how *easy* it is to take the pills–anybody take supplements? Same deal. No taste, no smell, just capsules–down the hatch! : )
