Don’t Eat These Cereals!

sugar cereal sm2501 Dont Eat These Cereals! We’ve been hearing a lot lately about the nutritious value – or lack thereof – in kids cereals. The worst, they say, are being marketed to our kids.

So which cereals, exactly, are the worst? Thank heavens for handy dandy charts (yes, we watch too much Blues Clues – perhaps that’s what’s frying the brain cells?)!

According to the research:

  1. Reese’s Puffs
  2. Corn Pops
  3. Lucky Charms
  4. Cinnamon Toast Crunch tied with Cap’N Crunch
  5. Trix tied with Froot Loops
  6. Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles (likewise a tie)
  7. Cocoa Puffs
  8. Cookie Crisp

And that, my friends, sums up all the really good stuff I like to eat when I’m in a bad mood. Because I’m even crankier now, you’ll have to check in with the Toronto Star for the good picks.

As Sandy Maple pointed out the other day – if you think putting a bowl of sugary flakes in front of your kids is a good idea, perhaps you have been eating too many of them. So there were no big shockers on this list. The question is: are you going to change anything after reading it?

Ha! Those are all the cereals we ate as kids!! I think it might be partly nostalgia when people buy them. As for our household, we eat organic Os and other cardboardy stuff. BUT, the organic stuff can be just as bad… Clifford Crunch is really like Captain Crunch in a fancy, healthier.but.it’s.not.looking disguise. I think it’s up to us parents to read the nutrition labels and figure it out.

We used to buy Reese’s Puffs to eat as a dessert. No milk necessary, just get a coffee filter full (why yes, this was in college).

i think if you gives these cereals in moderation its ok. You acn’t let your kids eat this for breakfast lunch and dinner but i think it’s ok for breakfast every once in a while.

Is this surprising to anyone?

Why not just pour a bowl of sugar and let them eat that? It’s cheaper.

Manjari commented on Oct 27 09 at 5:43 pm

You might as well give your child a cookie as to serve them one of these cereals. I don’t understand why this is newsworthy – those cereals were crap when we were kids and they are crap now.
Turn the box over and read the label – it’s not rocket science. And people wonder why the childhood obesity rate is climbing…

I will consider this validation for me to continue eating my Golden Grahams!

Yeah, I really don’t understand how this isn’t just common sense.

Brex – used to do the same with Cocoa Puffs in college :-)

I’m guessing it’s no coincidence that most of the cereals on the “good” list cost 2-3 times more than those on the “bad” list.

Personally, I think video games and TV have a lot more to do with childhood obesity than the occasional bowl of Fruity Pebbles. What happened to everything in moderation? It’s the kids who are NEVER allowed to eat anything “bad” who go nuts when faced with a cupcake at a friend’ birthday party. Sugar is only the devil if you make it one.

I wish the “healthy” ones were reviewed for cereals that my kids might actually eat… I don’t even want to eat those!

JenM commented on Oct 29 09 at 5:22 pm

yeah please put the good cereal list down so that we could tell what to buy!!
