Morning News – Bombs Over Baghdad
Sad news from Iraq — 155 people are dead as a result of recent bombings in Baghdad. (CBC)Is Depo-Provera addictive? It sounds lke a lot of women who have been taking the birth-control injections are experiencing withdrawl symptoms once they stop. I can’t recall hearing a lot about Depo-Provera in the past few years; maybe it wasn’t getting headlines, or maybe it was and I just didn’t notice. (ABC News)
Fox News is, like, wicked psyched that the Obama administration doesn’t like them. You know, it’s all well and good that we (including myself here) like to bloviate about cable news. But let’s keep it in perspective. In the grand scheme of things, not that many people are watching any of these channels. Glenn Beck has 3 or 4 million viewers. That’s not a lot for a cable news show, but not a lot in terms of television viewership overall. (L.A. Times; the viewership thing is my 2 cents.)
Newt Gingrich may run for President in 2012. Man, that guy has some skeletons in his closet. Could be interesting if he decides to run. (L.A. Times)
The Yankees are going to the World Series. Whoo-hoo! (Manila Bulletin, which is where I get all of my sports news. Why, what paper do you read?)
“Paranormal Activity” took the top spot in this weekend’s box office with $22,000,000, bringing their total to $62,477,000. The movie cost 75 cents to make. (OK, it was actually $15,000. But you get the idea.) Paramount might make a sequel. Which is a great idea, because, you know, “Blair Witch Project 2″ was such a huge hit. (Hint: it wasn’t. At all.) Rounding out the top 5 were “Saw VI” ($14,800,000, although the budget was only $11,000,000 — why are these horror movies so freakin’ cheap?), “Where the Wild Things Are” ($14,420,000, $53,960,000 cume, and a budget of $100 million — why are these kids’ movies so freakin’ expensive?), “Law Abiding Citizen” ($12,713,000, $40,318,000 cume, $50 million budget), and “Couples Retreat” ($11,097,000, $78,213,000 cume, $70 million budget — for a comedy? That seems like a lot). (Box Office Mojo)
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some spare change in my pocket and I’m going to use it to make a horror movie. Hey, why not?
