Gun in a School Guy Says “I Never Though About It”
There are idiots and then there’s this guy! An upstate New York man who brought a loaded weapon into a school building, prompting a lockdown, says he never even thought about it.
Really? You didn’t think a gun on school premises was sort of a bad idea? Scratch that, reverse it. You didn’t think a LOADED gun on school premises was sort of a bad idea?
Donald Daggett showed up at the Tri-Valley Central School to complain about school kids driving too fast near his house. He was already talking to the principal in his office when he announced he had a loaded gun with him. Why? According to the Times Herald Record, Daggett told state police he thought the principal would call the kids into the office for a dressing down - and he didn’t want them to be uncomfortable with him because he had a gun.
But the principal and the students in grades K through twelve who walked past you wouldn’t be uncomfortable?
This sounds like one out of the Darwin Awards, albeit with a happier ending than most of their stories. And although Daggett is now facing charges, school officials agree there was no real intent to hurt kids in this incident.
Do you think twice before taking things onto school grounds - be it a gun, a cigarette, what have you?

Maybe its because of the line of work I’m in, but I take stock of where I’m going to be on any given day and make sure that I’m appropriate for it (i.e. don’t wear steel toed boots in a courthouse, make sure I don’t have screwdrivers in my bag at a hospital, etc. etc. etc — I work in construction), further, since I use my bag when I’m off work, I make sure anything that could be construed as a weapon (again, screwdrivers etc) are removed before I go to a sporting event or similar.

He stomped down to the school, loaded gun in pocket, to give the students and the principal a good ol’ “get off my lawn” fist-shaking? He somehow thought that once he complained, the principal would call the students (does he know WHICH students? would he prefer to speak to the entire student body?) and he didn’t want them to be uncomfortable with his concealed weapon. The one no one would know about if he didn’t mention it. Was he planning to wave it around for emphasis?
Eric commented on Oct 23 09 at 12:13 pmGotta know your state’s laws. I’m a big carry advocate and shooter, but there are laws about where your permit allows you to carry. I have no idea why when carrying concealed you would inform anyone other than a police officer that you are carrying. The problem here is that he broke the law. Not that he was unsafe, or that the gun was fundamentally unsafe.
Citizen Mom commented on Oct 23 09 at 12:36 pmWell, since he didn’t know the most basic restricted place - a school - perhaps the means by which someone is allowed to carry a weapon needs to be reviewed. And just because you can carry a gun into somewhere doesn’t mean that you always should. The old fool who dropped his loaded gun on the floor at a town hall meeting on health care this summer is a perfect example.

Gun’s kill people, that makes them fundamentally unsafe. According to the 2nd Amendment, individuals do not have the right to be armed. The only members of society who can legally be armed are members of the military, serving in active duty. Under no circumstances should we ever have armed civilians, especially not in schools. In case you doubt me, read it. It is very clear about who is allowed to be armed:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
A well regulated Militia, and only a well regulated Militia. There is only one well regulated militia in the U.S., and that is out military.
Eric commented on Oct 23 09 at 5:36 pmSam, the Supreme Court of the United States disagrees with you. Heller v. DC found that the intent was to create an individual right. Also, I’d argue that people are fundamentally unsafe. More people have fatal accidents every year in the US on their bicycles than with their firearms.
