Morning News – Mouse Found Near Cheesecake

mouse found near cheesecake 150x150 Morning News Mouse Found Near CheesecakeSo, ew. That photo, from the website Brooklynian, is of the window display at Junior’s, a legendary Brooklyn eatery.

That’s a mouse. And it’s near the cheesecake. As the reader who posted the pics put it, “So, unless you like extra chocolate sprinkles on your strawberry cheese cake I would steer clear…”

I have never been so happy to be lactose intolerant.

The Health Department is investigating. Here are the pics full-size.

A few more items that are, hopefully, less icky.

- Windows 7 launches today. Wow, do I not care about that. (CNN Money)

- Government officials don’t seem to be doing a great job dealing with a possible Swine Flu (or H1N1, or “heinie”) pandemic. Or at least, they aren’t doing a very good job communicating with the public. Now the CDC tells us that “flu predictions are often futile,” and, countering fears that the vaccine will show up too late to help anyone, they add that “belated vaccinations could help combat a possible second wave of H1N1.” So that means… what does that mean? (L.A. Times)

- New Hampshire Republican Sen. Judd Gregg told CNN that the United States is “basically on the path to a banana-republic-type of financial situation in this country” because of the projected $1.4 trillion deficit. If you watch the whole 6 minute interview, most of what he says is less crazy-sounding than that soundbite.

But this whole “you can’t blame Bush” trope that the GOP Conservative Hive Mind has been propagating lately is nuts. If you look at this chart, it’s easy to see that, in fact, the deficit increased dramatically under Reagan and Bush I, went down under Clinton (remember the surplus?) and then rose under Bush II (NOTE: the link has changed, per Eric’s comment below; the original link was to a chart of the National Debt). Obama has not even been in office for a full year. Is it fair to question the policies of his administration and what effect they may have on the future? Of course. Is it insane to place all of the blame for our current economic woes on the current administration, and to pretend that Republicans are the party of “fiscal responsibility”? Yep. Also, if you’re going to say “can’t blame Bush,” Rush Limbaugh et al needs to stop blaming Bill Clinton. Bush II has been out of office for less than a year. Clinton left in 2000. This is basic math, people. Adding to the hypocrisy is this quote from former Vice President Dick Cheney — “Reagan proved deficits don’t matter.” Perhaps they only matter when a Democrat is in office? (CNN)

Apart from the whole 2 wars thing (regardless of if we should be in them or not) GW still expanded the defecit. Now Brett, I’m going to guess you don’t listen to a lot of conservative talk radio. Limbaugh, Beck, and many others were decidedly against TARP and regularly crap on GW for its passage. I certainly would not call the Republicans the party of ‘fiscal responsibility.’ I think it is worth looking at the fact that our deficit spending in 08 and 09 will combine to be more than our deficit spending from 92-06 (inclusive). Our deficit spending in 08 and 09 will be 37% higher than Bush’s previous six years combined (I excluded 01 as it was a surplus year). Also Brett, the chart you provided was not of the deficit, but of the national debt. They are different. If you realize that deficit is the first derivative of debt, good for you but please provide people who don’t know the difference the appropriate graph. If you don’t know that, you need to learn.

Thanks for your comment, Eric. Sometimes we’re working quickly and mistakes are made.
As for Limbaugh, Beck, et al, I had heard that they were no fans of TARP. They do, however, use the “don’t blame Bush” line frequently, as do many others. And in the same breath they blame Clinton; maybe not for economic woes, but he takes shots 8 years after leaving office. But Bush was without fault, or at least without fault that we were supposed to mention, after being gone for a couple of months. The logic of that escapes me.
As for debt/deficit, I admit to not being well versed in matters of the economy. I do know that there is plenty of blame to be had on both sides of the aisle, and it would be nice to hear more politicians and talk-show hosts acknowledge that fact.

If you want to hear talk-show hosts acknowledge it, you have to listen to them and read their blogs. Every conservative I listen to has been squawking about corporate bailouts since and even before GW’s TARP. Step outside the comfort zone.

I listen to Limbaugh maybe every other day on my way home from work. Been reading Michelle Malkin’s website and articles for years. I consider myself pretty informed on their day to day rhetoric. They didn’t love TARP, it didn’t sit well with their populist rage game. Indeed they spoke out about it. They also clearly outlined that once Obama took office, he “owned” this mess and that they would scream it to the high heavens. Hell, Malkin started blaming it on Obama the day after he won the election. The pop-culture conservatives suddenly discover fiscal responsibility once their guy isn’t signing the checks. I love how that dopey Bobby Jindal is talking out his ass about fiscal responsibility while posing with big stimulus checks all over Louisiana. The big name republicans are not even hiding their hypocrisy because they don’t respect their audience to find out the truth.

Can’t listen or watch Beck though. This movie quote about sums up my feeling on the Beckerhead: “what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I’ve ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response was there anything that could even be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.”

Mistress_Scorpio commented on Oct 22 09 at 8:09 pm

I think the politicians forget about Bush’s role more than the radio pundits do. I think the Republican party bears very little resemblence to the grass roots conservatives who continually elect them. Scorpio and Brett, you may like Beck more than you think. If you want to find a guy that is pissed off at GW Bush for his role in screwing up our economy, Glenn Beck’s your man. You probably won’t hear him say it every day though, as he’s currently more focused on the hole we’re continuing to dig as opposed to the depth of the hole when Obama took office.
